The Original Folk City Tattoo

Matt has done 99% of my tattoos. He is amazing and I cannot imagine letting someone else tattooing me. He has a way of making each one unique and looks so stunning.

As long as I live in Hampton Roads and Nate is tattooing, I will continue going to him for work. I have been getting my work done by Nate almost 10 years now and he never disappoints! I love how my tattoos fit in each space, the colors, the line, the work, the flow. Its all perfect!!! Nate is the best. His shop is always clean and organized. You can tell Nate cares about his work, he is very picky and particular. Will forever go to him to get my pain therapy!!

Absolutely wonderful experience. I have had several tattoos done by Matt, 2 of which were cover-ups. Each one tured out absolutely beautiful. He definitely exceeded my expectations on the cover-ups. He was very patient, made sure to explain each step, and showed all placement before the process started. I highly recommend 👌

Had an awesome experience getting my vertical labret piercing done by Heather. She also changed and matched my septum jewelry, styling my facial piercings so well! The Shop was very clean, and super traditional inside. Love this place and had a great experience!

This is my sixth tattoo with Nate Hudson. It is a cover-up of the first one he ever gave me (circa 2008?) that I wanted to redesign and rework. Every tattoo he has given me throughout the years has turned out beautifully. I always get so many compliments on the line work, details, and color saturation. Hes my tattoo artist for life. Plus, his shop is clean, inviting, interesting, and the staff is incredibly knowledgeable, experienced, talented, and helpful. I HIGHLY recommend Folk City! Thanks again, Nate!

I had a daith and nostril piercing performed by Amber. It was tricky to match the nostril piercing on the opposite side but she made it look easy. Very professional and very clean. I will certainly be back again.

Went to get a few piercings done. Let me just say that I absolutely LOVE Heather. She asked me questions and answered my questions. Gave me her honest opinions on what she has seen with her experience and we decided to not do all the piercings I wanted but to do them in stages and let’s just say I WILL be going back to get my other piercings. I lost my husband at the beginning of January and she made me feel very comfortable. She talked to me like I was a friend and not just another customer. She was patient with me and took her time explaining everything she was doing and was honest. She will be the one that I trust from now on to do any piercings in the future. Let’s just say that I now have a new friend.

I’ve been to Folk City a couple times for simple things like jewelry changes on existing piercings, but I decided to get pierced by them for my birthday last week and it was a great experience! Heather was amazing in explaining everything she was doing and what to expect before, during, and after the piercing. She even gave me a free bottle of saline spray to clean my piercings with! The entire experience was amazing. I got my nipples pierced and not once did I feel uncomfortable in any way. Everyone that I have encountered there has been very nice and welcoming. Will definitely be going back for future piercings!

I CANNOT recommend this place enough for your piercing needs!I originally came in for my nostrils, which Heather did. The next day she swapped out my 2nd lobe jewelry to match! I went in a few days later to treat myself to some new ear piercings. I gave Amber some creative freedom with the Halloween pieces and she came through with the little ghost and spider web helix! Both ladies took the time to make sure everything was placed properly and to my liking rather than trying to get me in and out. Overall the shop was very clean and professional while still maintaining a welcoming and friendly atmosphere. I’ve had my fair share of piercings and this is by far the best experience I’ve ever had! I can’t wait to get more work done here :)

Nate Hudson is an amazing artist! I have been going to him for 4 years. Great hourly price and wonderful work. He is fast and light handed (the best type of artist for a big piece) The Medusa in the photo he freehand drew on my knee. This tattoo was roughly around 7ish hours including the drawing it on me. Worth it. This was a two session tattoo.. I recommend him any day!!I have over 40 tattoos from Nate. Big and small.I added more of his work other than the Medusa!-toothless eyes- Groot venom- three head tattoos- cruella- llama potion- hook patch- Deadpool- freehand words- Rorschach inkblot of jokers face with Batman in the eyes

Ric did a fantastic job on my tattoo! I went in to finish a tattoo I have had for a few years. He was helpful and very attentive to my input to make sure I was happy with the final design. Love the shop decor, stations were super sanitary and the people are great. Highly recommend.

This was my first time here and I was very impressed! I knew I wanted floral work in my tattoo and when I saw Kaira’s portfolio I noticed she did beautiful work! I went into Folk city for a nose piercing and was so happy with the service, I left with an ear piercing too. Kazo was my piercer and he is one of the sweetest people I have ever met. He was very thorough and walked me through every step. He made I sure was happy with the placements for both piercings before he did anything. Got matching nostril piercings with my daughter for her birthday back in June. Our piercer (Kazo) was very professional, knowledgeable and sanitary. He described the entire process step by step so we knew exactly what to expect which made the experience enjoyable.Went back recently to get a retainer put in for a medical procedure. Same great service was provided.

I went to see Heather to get several new pieces of jewelry and new piercings in both lobes of my ear. She was so nice and made me feel very comfortable, she explained everything thoroughly, showed me all of my options, and answered all of my questions. She made sure I was happy with what I was getting and really took a lot of time with me. I absolutely loved Heather and will be seeing her again in the future and I definitely recommend her!!

I went to see Heather for the second time today, and just like the first visit, she made me feel safe and comfortable. I am absolutely in love with Folk City. I have 4 different tattoos from 3 different popular locations in Hampton Roads and I am by far impressed with Folk City. Each artist is wildly talented and personable. The atmosphere is top tier. EJ did matching tattoos for my husband and I. They are stunning, fine lined, and incredibly detailed for the price. His style is unmatched and I will most definitely recommend him and return to him in the future.

We took a family trip to Ireland and were all supposed to get tattoos (for 3 out of 4, it was going to be our first). Well, I got sick on the day we were supposed to get them, so I wasnt able. But I decided to get one when we got home and Folk City was the only place I wanted to do it.Im not going to name my artist, because the experience was great from start to finish...the work was great...except for one thing. The tattoo differed from the quote I provided by one very significant word. And while the quote now marginally keeps the same message, its wrong.I know I shouldve double and triple checked the stencil, but I was more concerned about the design than the wording so I missed it.My first tattoo will always make me think about what if I had checked one more time. I expected them to get it right.

I had an old earlobe piercing that was not straight/ centered and it bothered me for years. I came to Amber and she pierced it to where it should be. She was very pleasant and professional. The salon itself was really clean and I highly recommend going here for piercing and tattoo needs.

Heather was very professional and knowledgeable! I received a nose piercing tonight and it was super quick and felt like a pinch. She assisted in picking out jewely and gave thorough instructions for aftercare! I’ll definitely recommend her and I hope to return soon!

I just got my nose piercing in February by the coolest and kindest person and it healed beautifully! I would definitely go get it done by Kazo. My nose was pierced gently and it barely hurt. He placed it nicely and it made sense where he placed it so the oil in the crease of my nose won’t infect my piercing. He will answer all of your piercing questions and explain things about it to you if you ask. I stopped by just to ask some piercing questions and he didn’t mind at all. He even offered if I have any more questions later that I can contact him on Instagram about it. He helped me learn more about my piercing and now I have no worries. The inside of the building was clean and it was super awesome looking inside. I felt very welcomed at Folk City and it is my number one place to get piercings I will definitely be coming back for more!

I made my first appointment here yesterday with Kazo and could not have asked for a better experience. I have a few other piercings already, but Kazo still walked me through each step. I designed my tattoo and he created it exactly how I wanted it, but so much better. Other tattoo shops Ive been to the artists have a chip on their shoulders. Not here. This is a great place! Hello everyone. Ive been getting tattoo work at OGFC since 2015. I have full sleeves, as well as chest and back work. The majority of the work was done by Nikki Snyder but she is no longer at this location, however there are other very capable artists with impressive portfolios to choose from. Recently I have been working with Logan Miles Davis. Im impressed with his work and enjoy his conversation.The staff are friendly and welcoming. The facility is impeccably clean, the wall-to-wall decor is classy and fitting, and the restroom is as attractive as the rest of the establishment.I highly recommend this business and will continue visiting OGFC for the foreseeable future.Thank you for reading.

I visited here a month ago just to “look” at the selection for nose piercings they had available and get an idea on the price w/ the piercing. I ended up leaving with a nose piercing (: possibly going back for more.Heather walked me through all of the steps, answered all my questions about the jewelry and piercing itself, and showed me the placement of where it’d be. Legit it took no more than 5 mins.The whole process was a breeze and Heather and I believe her apprentice were so sweet the whole time.She also was open to all the questions I had provided a lot of knowledge on it, as well as recommendations for what type of metals are best long term.I would 100% recommend Heather for all of your piercing needs. Go for that piercing!!

I have gotten many of my tattoos done here and love them all. They were well thought out in design and the colors are vibrant and bold. I absolutely love the quality of work they do. They are very sterile, neat and clean as well. And it also helps that their pricing is very affordable. I love that you can bounce ideas off of the artists and they are fully capable of delivering excellent work. Everyone is very friendly, laid back, social and comforting. EJ was our Artist. Dude totally nailed the daughter/father tattoo for Nicole and I...would highly recommend him to anyone. Atmosphere is cool and low-key. Loved everything about our experience. Piece of advice: Make sure you plan in advance because a lot of the Artists are booked up weeks in advance.

I went in and got a conch piercing done as well as some other cartalidge jewelry changed out. Heather was so helpful and nice throughout the entire process. I came to Nate Hudson with a picture of a guinea pig and a funny childhood memory. He took more ownership over the creation of what is now, hands down, my best tattoo. The level of detail that he put into the design and getting it just perfect is truly the best I have seen. I really could not have asked for any better. Definitely someone I will go back for the next design and he is worth the wait.

I absolutely NEVER leave reviews on anything 🤣 BUT I have to this time. For the last maybe 5 years I’ve wanted to get my nipples pierced but I was terrified to do so. Well today was the day! Finally got it done by non other than Kazo. Don’t sleep on the “apprentice” title. This guy was amazing! He hyped me up the entire time and he was so professional! Folk City Tattoo is by far the best place you could possible go in the west Hampton Roads area. Jbird has been my artist there for close to 2 years now and is the most friendly hard working tattooer I have ever had the pleasure of working with. Scheduling a tattoo here may take a while and some people may say its to Expensive but with tattoos You get what you pay for and for the quality of work from Folk City I would consider it on the cheaper side. I would Highly recommend anyone to this shop as it has been my go to spot now for so long. I have recommended 8 of my friends here to get tattoos and none of them have left disappointed with plenty of them coming back for more.

I made a reservation a month in advance, and when I showed up my appointment wasnt in the system. We were handed off to the apprentice artist and the whole thing took way longer than we expected because they were supposed open at noon but werent ready to go until 12:45. Aside from that, the artist was very friendly and accommodating, and the tattoos look great.

My father passed away from lung cancer a couple weeks ago and this tattoo was to honor him...i couldnt have asked for what he did, he took his interpretation of my idea and made it even better. I love falkcity. Falk does very nice work. Very thorough. Easygoing/understanding. Really makes it comfortable to hangout for a couple hours. Recently got some more pokemon. The vibe inside is really quite chill. I recomend falk for your tattoo needs.

For two years in a row I have gone to JBird @ Folk City for my tattoos.There is often a wait to get in to see him, but it is well worth it. The experience has always been excellent, his skill and willingness to help you sketch up the perfect piece of art, followed by equal skill and attention to detail during the ink and shade.Great conversation during the session which makes it go by fast. Im already thinking about my next! Might even have him advise on a cover up for a 25+ year old cherub, or ugly baby (as my wife calls it).Thanks JBird - looking forward to the next.

Davey Sheets did a custom piece for my daughters first tattoo. He checked multiple times to ensure the drawing, placement, and color choice was what my daughter wanted. the shop is clean, the staff is friendly, and there was no sense of pressure in any way. This is one of the better shops in the U.S..

I recently got my nose pierced by Heather. She was very professional and thoroughly went through aftercare procedures afterwards. My only disappointment is that you dont get to pick your jewelry. Theres one starter nose stud you get and you cant change it for three/four months. Its pretty, but it would have been nice to be able to have a selection of starter studs to pick from.

Logan Davis did a bear with some trees on my forearm. I was amazed with his skill. It was beyond what I expected. I will be back to get more fore sure.The studio was clean and people were welcoming. My wife even enjoyed sitting there watching it get done.

In comparison to the other tattoo shops that Ive been to around hampton roads, this is my favorite and this is the shop I suggest the most. My reason being is because they were one of the best quality, more detailed pieces I have and it turned out to be the cheapest in price. I have an eye on my right arm (realism) that I got from Blue Horseshoe and compared to the skull I got from Folk City, they are the same in size and detail difficulty, yet Folk City was 100 dollars cheaper. Also, I was recently at Ghost Ship and the tattoo I got there was simple, about the same size and still 50 dollars more expensive. But dont get me wrong, every shop I have been to was full of nice people that do great work.

FINALLY got a piercing ive been wanting and done by Heather! shes amazing and definitly cares about her work.i want more done and hoping for a tattoo there next !

Yesterday was my first experience with Folk City and they were great! Everyone was really cool and Jack did a phenomenal job and was gentle as possible! The price was very fair as well. I will be back to see Jack again!

After a terrible experience with an extremely rude artist in OBX, I was so relieved when I met EJ. He was friendly and knowledgeable and professional immediately. The entire staff at Folk City was. Chelsea at the front desk, Nate (who I believe is the owner), the other artists, everyone was nice and professional. It was also super hygienic and clean. EJ created a piece for me that is absolutely perfect. Its exactly what I wanted and I felt like he read my mind. Not that this is necessarily important, but Ive gotten a TON of compliments on it too and Ive been happy to tell people where I went and who did it. I will be back to see EJ very soon!!!

I had a really bad tattoo I need to be finished or covered up. I walked in and off the bat super friendly and willing to help. Kaira hooked me up with a transformation of a tattoo! Shes very talented, professional young lady! Highly recommend

Great place to get a tattoo. All the people are friendly and they make you feel welcome as you get your tattoo. I have only had JBird do my tattoos, but everyone there is very talented and can give you a great tattoo. Highly recommend it.

I wish I could give Folk City 10 stars. The best experience from beginning to end. My tatto artist name was JACK. Really nice guy. The epitome of professionalism and genuity.I had him to tattoo a heart in memory of my mothers passing in 2003. My mother passed away from cancer, and it still hurts to this day.Once I showed Jack a picture of the heart. He says, DO YOU MIND IF I PUT MY ADDED TOUCH TO IT? I said sure.He sketch me a heart with flowers on it. Unbelievable, it was DOGWOOD FLOWERS. That was my mothers favorite tree. The dogwood tree. Needless to say it brought tears to my eyes. And it was absolutely beautiful.. Beautiful and clean establishment also. The restroom is IMMACULATE. So clean that you can eat in there. Thank you all again FOLK CITY. THANK YOU JACK!!!!!!!!! (:

This place is extremely clean and low key. The artists are professional but also friendly. Some take longer than others to get appointments with although that depends on how busy they are which is understandable. Theyre work, from what Ive seen is really good and they are all really willing to answer any questions you may have.

We just got really awesome tattoos at Folk City Tattoo with Mike Cann. Yall come check them out and get some ink. Mike is amazing. This shop is top notch. Very clean. Professional. We will be back.

At 72, this was my first tattoo. I wanted to honor my Granddaughter with her name around a scripture verse Psalm 127:3. Ric was my artist and did the design and ink perfectly.

Many thanks to Davey Sheets for an excellent job repairing/finishing a tattoo started by another artist at another shop. The tattoo started out as a disaster and Davey did a great job fixing someone elses mess. Ill be going back to Davey at Folk City to have him do my next tattoo from start to finish.

EJ did phenomenal, but I wasnt the least bit surprised. Hes so dope I couldve gave him 5 stars before he even started. He did a cover up on my awful tattoo from Gregs Tattoos and turned it into something I want to show off to everybody (see before and after pics). Every single line was measured and tattooed with precision, and that let me know how sincerely he cares about his clients. The sweet guy did not even want to charge me more than $250 despite the complexity of his work and the time required to do it.Plus he gets bonus points because he is pretty cute lol.

Nate the owner is amazing! His work is flawless and I will continue to work with him. I went in with a vision and he far exceeded expectations. Thanks Nate I’ll be back very soon.

Terrible. Waited 20ins for the piercer because she was with another client. As soon as she was done she started helping someone who came in after me ( and no, she did not have an appointment.)Went to Finders Keepers instead... much better service.

Went in for some jewelery the woman working was super awesome have never had a tattoo done here but have seen some of their work on friends and its amazing so my next tattoo will totally be done by them

So when you tell a potential customer, who said they could come immediately, to wait 30 minutes before showing up...thats an appointment.So to my surprise, when I showed up, I was told some walk-ins had come in, and I could go after them, maybe an hour or so. I can understand having to wait if a previous session goes longer than expected. But dont give me a time to show up, and then expect me to wait for people who just showed up.I cant speak to this shops quality, but Ive heard and read great things. But poor business practices are poor business practices.
