Heathen Tattoo

I went in with one of my sisters in April while Michael did a second session with her. I was immediately impressed with the artists attitudes and professionalism. I had wanted a Mickey Mouse tattoo for almost 30 years but was never brave enough to do it. After witnessing the way the guys dealt with clients, I knew I was ready to conquer my fear and I scheduled an appointment with Michael a couple weeks later. I ended up getting a bigger tattoo than what I had on mind but now that I have it, I would not have it any other way. The line work, details, and overall quality are amazing! I have been in twice to finish it as well as joining my other sister and nephew while they got theirs. Each time, professionalism and passion for their craft was shown to all who walked through the doors. Thank you for making me feel at ease and making it such a positive experience!

Just got my first tattoo here. I was nervous and immedietly felt at ease being in this shop. Everyone there made me feel welcomed and comfortable. It was an awesome experience, and I had a lot of fun chatting while my other friends were getting theirs done. Thank you for an amazing introduction to the tattoo world! I’ll be back!

On a family vacation to the Durango area we decided we all wanted to get tattooed together. My daughter (age 19) wanted her first one. We decided (as cheesy as it sounds) to get simple, “mountain” tattoos to commemorate our trip. Stopped into Heathen Tattoo to check out the shop in downtown Durango. Clean, but comfy feeling shop and the guys there where awesome so we pulled the trigger. Can’t say enough good things about the artists. Greats guys that instantly made us all feel like we have known them for years. Most of us in the group have spent A-LOT of time in tattoo shops over the years and all agreed this one is top notch. We where walk ins and they where eating lunch but they got us all right in, drew up individual pieces for us and knocked them out. All the time having fun, joking around and making everyone feel good about it. My daughter was nervous this being her first tat and the guys did great making sure she felt comfortable. If your in SW Colorado and want a great experience and a forever memory, stop looking at reviews, put your phone down and get your a$$ to Heathen, this shop is great! -Briz

We had the best time with Silas, Derek, Flip and Mike! Four of us came in with similar design ideas and they took care of us, made us feel comfortable and the artwork turned out perfect!!! Would highly recommend!

First tattoo I got there was good! The last two not so much, I got a two different guy for my last two tattoos and honestly I don’t really like them. The lines are crooked, I tried to schedule with my first tattoo guy because he did such a good job but, when we got there we were placed on this other guy who said he just started working at the tattoo shop :/Edit: (It’s not allowing me to reply to the owner) I’m confused, because I did ask what artist I wanted? I sent a message on Heathen’s official site to schedule my appointment. Asking for Derek, the response was basically “we have no control over that”. I come to the shop from my appointment and the artist I requested is doing another person’s tattoo. I wouldn’t have minded to work with Derek’s schedule. Instead we were given to this guy who told us he just got hired here and he’s new at officially tattooing. He was heavy handed and made the line art wayyyy too thick. Lines of the tattoo are messy and there are several mistakes.If you do want to get a tattoo here, ask for Derek. The other two guys are heavy handed and do messy lines when it comes to patch/line work.

Great place, great people. My mom and I went for our first tattoos, and we were not disappointed. Derek (the owner) did them, and they came put stunning. Rich color, clean designs, and very personable. He helped calm the first timer anxiety, and I quickly found that we had much in common. I am an artist specializing in fish, and we had long conversations about trout conservation and the state of Colorados watershed while he worked. Would recommend

Ive been wanting a specific custom tattoo for about 20 years. The only thing that stopped me was having someone I trusted to do the tattoo, its permanent, so I wanted to get it right. I came to Derek with an idea, and he helped me turn it into a reality. Not only is Derek an excellent artist, he is equally good with all of the techniques and methods required to make a tattoo look great. I wouldnt hesitate to go back, and I would recommend him to anyone I know. Thanks Derek!

Every artist here does an amazing job. Very friendly atmosphere and they happily took 3 of us with no notice as walk-ins, which we thought might have been an unreasonable request.

Derek has an amazing place and made my first time tattoo experience comfortable and easy. We were a family of three and were able to get in easily. He answered all of our questions and told some great stories while he worked. This man is clearly and artist but didn’t shy away from the simple work we were asking of him. The shop was extremely clean and comfortable. If there is a 2nd tattoo in my future, I would use him or any of his other artists without question.

Derek at Heathen Tattoo is not just talented, he also has a ton of knowledge and experience. He is easy to hang out with while getting inked, has a soft touch with the needle and creates beautiful pieces!! The parlor is clean welcoming and everyone is friendly! Thank you Heathen Tattoo!! Michael is truly a great tattoo artist. Professional attitude and honest in his recommendations. Great studio. Clean and professional staff. We came from out of town and stopped by after reading all the positive reviews. Immediately greeted at the the door by the owner or manager. Scheduled an appointment with Michael the following week. Used to live in NM but have long moved on. Wanted a large Zia Tattoo on my chest. Showed Michael some ideas and he came up with a great design and proper placement. Focused on his job during the tattoo and not distracted by other conversations going on in the studio.Highly recommend the studio and Michael.

My fiancé and I stopped by to talk to a couple artists about getting some work done. Micheal had spoken to me on the phone and was very helpful and gave us a really good feeling about this place. When we walked in they looked at our pictures of baby foot prints and were willing to get to work right away. Jason did a great job on the foot prints. Friendly conversation and really relaxed environment. We had our daughter with us. I know I know. Not the best place for a 2 year old. But we weren’t expecting instant work to be done. That being said. They were very cool about her being there. Micheal didn’t have enough time to get my tattoo going but he set me up for the very next day. He did an awesome job on my knuckles and was very light handed. He took his time on placement but got it dead on the first time. We will absolutely be returning and hopefully get some more work done by these guys. Awesome awesome place.

Absolutely love the work done by the artists. Very reliable and understanding— they will take as much time as they need to ensure your happy with your tattoo, including placement, size, and smaller details. Heathens is definitely one of the most welcoming shops around who wont disappoint!

Jason at Heathen tattoo is an amazing artist! Ive lost count of how many tattoos Ive received from him but they are ALL exactly what I wanted and you can tell he cares about every peice hes done, no matter the theme. Which is super appreciated. The atmosphere in the shop has been consistently warm and super clean and I really couldnt ask for a better tattooing experience!

I love getting tattoos here and can not recommend it more! I’ve gotten tattooed twice with Derek and have my third appointment already booked with him as well. Amazing guy who truly loves what he does.

Worst experience. I asked for two specific flowers with my friends handwriting (who passed away). I made a consultation appointment which went great. When I arrived for my tattoo appointment, Derek gave me a hard time when I asked for one of the flowers I had wanted originally. He was very rude and said “you people need to tell me what you want”, which I did. He put more flowers on and I noticed he didn’t have my friends handwriting on there. He completely forgot that he took a picture of her name during our consultation. He lost my friends handwriting. I’m glad I did not get my memorabilia tattoo done by him. It shows he didn’t care.

All the artists that work here are welcoming and very professional. They make you feel comfortable from the first step through the door. They listen to you and give productive, respectful feedback. The location is genuinely spotless, easy to get to and find parking. Every piece that I’ve seen come out of here is immaculately done. The full color, realism tattoos that Derek has done on me are vibrant and clean. I get compliments constantly.

For a first tattoo experience, I had a great time. Jason was amazing. Even talked about modifications mid tattoo, and he made the best out of it. Will definitely be back for my second. Fantastic line work, great shading and exactly what I wanted.

Every time I’ve gone there I leave with another great experience and another awesome tattoo. The artists are all very talented. I got my first tattoo there and now have two full sleeves, a large back piece, and have started on a leg. All work has been done there.

This was my first time at the shop but not the first time seeing Derek. The first thing I noticed was how pristinely clean the shop was. I actually had a conversation with Derek in which he took pride in how clean his shop was due to his line of work. Every artist takes pride on their work and does amazing work. I have been extremely happy with the work Derek provided as well, he is going to be my go to go from now on. Derek absolutely killed it. Professional, affordable, clean work. His eye for detail is amazing. He’s done all of my work, amazing owl on my chest to the sleeves on my arms!! Was able to get a pretty last minute appointment for my first tattoo while I was in town remembering my late brother. (His handwriting.) Derek was amazing and did everything possible to make my first tattoo such an easy yet memorable experience. I will definitely go back whenever I’m in Durango.

Derek has done 3 of my tattoos so far, all of which I absolutely love! He took his time to make sure the art was exactly how I liked it as far as detail, placement, color/shading, size etc... He always makes me feel comfortable and I know im in good hands as he is very professional and works out of a very clean environment.Highly recommend!!!

By far the best tattoo experience I have had. The shop is easy to locate and once youre inside, its bright, spacious, and clean. I had a rough design idea that I gave to Avery and she far exceeded my wildest dreams. The line work is impeccable and the shading is even. I have gotten so many compliments since getting my piece. Everyone was very friendly and helpful throughout the process as well. I cant imagine taking my business anywhere else at this point.

My sister and I popped into Heathen for matching tattoos. Derek was professional, fun and really put my sister (first tattoo!) at ease. The space is clean and wide open. There were two other tattooists in the shop and everyone was so friendly and just fun to be around. Best experience. Definitely recommend Heathen!

After looking at tattoos and reviews on Google I emailed them for a quote and then setup an appointment to discuss the details. Derek offered me the portfolios of all the artists there to make sure I was going to get a good opinion on which artist I wanted. I went with Derek. I came preshaved and ended up getting a portrait done. Your body your tattoo so he makes sure it is what you want! Ive gotten compliments from It looks so good it looks painted on; It looks just like her to it looks great; thats bada$$. He took his time and concentration, stayed late, and put up with us. I highly recommend you go there for your next tattoo. So thrilled with my tattoo and experience my wife has scheduled her appointment!

So glad I checked this place out. The location is super cool, located right in the heart of Durango. I was able to people watch throughout the entirety of my tattoo and honestly is was super soothing. The shop is clean, all the artists are super friendly and seem incredibly knowledgeable.Jason was my guy and he executed the tattoo I wanted so much better than I had even imagined. Heathen tattoo LLC is the best place to get a tattoo! Derek is one of the nicest guys and always does AMAZING work!
