Ive been coming to Primal for years! This shop is a staple in the community & THE best place to get pierced in humboldt county. They have a wide selection of high quality jewelry, and are ready to provide exactly what I need every time I come in. They are extremely knowledgeable and professional, while creating an atmosphere that makes you feel like you’re just hanging out with friends! Jennifer (one of the shop owners) pierced my septum a while back, and helped me size up my jewelry today. She is super kind & creates a very safe environment. I genuinely have such an awesome & fun time with her and the staff whenever I come in. Will be again soon, I’m sure! Thanks again!

Charged a more-than-reasonable price to fix a piercing from somewhere else. Then drew me a map for a good place to take my dogs hiking. We had a lovely walk, and my piercing is much better. Excellent place!

Valente did absolutely amazing on my septum piercing. He is so customer focused and will make you feel so comfortable that youll forget you nearly passed out from nerves on the drive over. Him and Jess are so fun to talk to and are insanely welcoming. I put an earring of mine on the counter to compare to something I wanted to buy, and Jess wiped the counter down after that, making sure everything remained sanitary for the guests. Valente made sure the placement, sanitation, and customer service were top notch throughout my visit. He talked me through every step and gave me a piercing that was even better than I imagined. If you want impeccable attention to detail, craft, and professionalism (with lots of fun, chatting, and banter if youre into that), I highly recommend Primal Decor for all your body modification needs. I love it here! Beautiful jewelry and excellent people. The price is reasonable from piercing to tattoo. Some of the most well known local artists are here and the business has been well established since 1995. Im looking forward to my tattoo especially after having such a great experience with my daughters septum piercing. Different person but neither would have been there this long if they were subpart. Im sure there are other places in town but thats not the answer when you consider what you will be living with for the rest of your life. The piercing is very clean and they strive for perfection. Make an appointment if youve ever wanted a piercing or tattoo. You wont regret it!

This place is beautiful! Not what you would expect a typical tattoo shop to look like, so many different choices for GOOD quality jewelry. The piercer Valente is amazing. So thorough, so clean, and quick! Hardly felt a thing. Ive had several body piercings, and he has truly been the fastest and most respectful piercer I have ever been to.

I custom ordered a piece from Anatometal through Primal Decor. I couldn’t even get other shops to call me back or answer the phone but Primal staff picked up every time I called with a polite and professional attitude. They helped me through sizing and pricing without a hitch, and the jewelry came sterile and shipped sealed in plastic inside the envelope to avoid tampering. Honored original price. Beautiful piece! Exactly as ordered. Would definitely order here again.

Louis has given me 7 beautiful tattoos over the last several years. Today I got 2 tattoos in memory of my daughters sudden, recent, passing away. Louis again, gave me beautiful tattoos. One included Love You, Mama, in her hand writing. The rest of the staff are extremely nice. As always, Primal Decor make it a very positive experience.

Today marks the 5th and final session to complete a sleeve Dan has been working on for months. First, lets cover the shop.This shop is top notch. Professional and elegant yet trendy and up beat. Primal has been a staple here for decades providing professional art. There is always a friendly smile to greet you and help you out.Dan is an amazing artist and an awesome guy. I was nervous in the beginning, trusting such a large piece in the hands of someone I dont know. But you have to build somewhere. I gave Dan several items of interest to through together and he compiled an amazing layout for the sleeve. Fantastic lines and coloring that flow beautifully. Appointments were on time each month giving ample time for healing.I recommend not only this shop, but Dan for tattoo work. I am speechless for how happy I am with this piece. All of my tattoos are from Luis at Primal Decor! Everyone is always friendly and helpful. They will take a lot of time making sure that you are satisfied, informed and comfortable. Very clean. I always recommend PD to everyone I know when they want a tattoo or piercing.

Clean, friendly. And great service. Got my daith piercing here. The head piercer is very good at her job. If youre looking to get a piercing but low on funds, they offer an apprentice piercer for a fraction of the cost.

TL;DR -1 step forward 2 steps back!- Disrespecting the Transhumanism movent in guise of fausly representing the Transgender movement.For a community claiming to promote the trans movement; I felt disrespected, picked on, and isolated when expressing my identity.Upon sign in, when asked to give your official information, one of the questions is your preferred pronoun.I gave mine, which is Dingus: a made up word from the childrens show Adventure Time.After my piercing, I was asked to never come to the shop again, and I quote We feel you were disrespectful by your answer on our questionnaire. We have trans people working here. I offered my sincere apology, was turned down when I offered a tip for the service (which I was happy with), and I felt unable to have a solid discourse; instead the owners mind already made up.Again, this is not a transgender friendly business, rather a trans-trans phobic house of oxymoronic Idiocracy!I wish the business and employees the best of luck on their journey of finding self. Heres a tip: dont judge and ridicule the very people who make up your group ❣️

UPDATE to show other side done in October by the other awesome piercer, Valente!I’ve had my nose pierced for about 3 months now and it is healing beautifully, thanks to Xochi!She really took her time and made sure she had everything clean/set up. I work in the medical field so-I have a different level of appreciation for that kind of thing🌞I will have to get back in to get the other side pierced❤️

One of the only good places around from what Ive seen and read from local reviews. Can be very pricey compared to other piercing shops, but will not have the same guarantee of quality experience. I went during covid (even pricer, but worth it) to get two second lobe piercings plus the jewelry and had a great experience. Amazing piercer, friendly, precise (literally measured with a small ruler to make sure they were even), and walked me right through the process making sure I was prepared. Also VERY COVID SAFE.

I took in a drawing I had created of Quezacoatl the feathered serpent, and Dan the artist who does color tattoos exceeded my expectations! We discussed the colors beforehand and his rendition was amazing! Plus he gave me a nice deal on a 5 hour tattoo! Very highly recommended!!!

I got my first tattoo here done by Dan Dozier. I cant imagine a better place to get one done. All of the staff members were very nice and informative. A few of them even came in during and after my session to see the tattoo. Dan did an amazing job turning the idea that I came to him with into a tattoo. It looks better than I ever could have hoped. My only small complaint is the lack of a chair in the room. Having to lay flat on my stomach with my arm out stretched for 2 hours got a little uncomfortable, but other than that my experience was perfect.

They did my cartilage and nose piercing and I love them! They were very professional, clean and answered all of my questions (even the dumb ones!) If I get another piercing, I’m definitely going to them. ❤️

One would probably consider me well-seasoned at this point. I have visited 9+ different shops for more tattoos and piercings than can reasonably be counted, and none of them come close to the experience at Primal Decor.For one, it is private. They do not use screens or booths, or just have open space-- They actually have separate rooms. If your piece requires any amount of undress, this will likely be a comfort. Even if that is not the case for you, it is definitely nice to avoid the passers-by creeping up mid-session to comment and observe.Their equipment is also very professional, something I did not appreciate until I went to a different shop, and an artist stuck a paper towel and saran wrap over their finished work. Primal also uses designated chairs, if I remember correctly, and it will make a difference as far as comfort goes.Their selection of jewelry is pretty great, and they do in-house anodizing. My misgiving here is that I have run into the same quality of starter/standard/no-frills jewelry at a less expensive price, but that was in Portland. That aside, the head piercer will work with you on complex projects, and is a seasoned veteran, making the entire process pleasant and smooth.I have only been tattooed by Luis while here, but I can highly recommend his work. He is excellent at script, and also trees. I have also gone in for dotwork, and been pleasantly surprised by his technique and lack of hassle. The piece he has done with very delicate linework gets compliments nearly all the time. Luis is always quite speedy about things too (Id est: Does not feel the need to take a break to smoke, can go from line work to shading immediately, et cetera), and the rates are very reasonable for the excellent quality. Have a clear goal, and communicate it, and your tattooing experience will go as well as is possible.Shout out to the counter staff, who make an effort with names and pronouns.250+ miles away, and I still want to go back.

If people are going to give this place one star they should really explain why. I have been going here since I was 15 and am now 20. I have gotten all of my piercings and tattoos done by the fabulous staff and recommend Primal to everyone I talk to about body modifications. Clean, educated, and wonderful energy and great personalities. No where else can compare!

They offered professional help with my piercing and told me it was done wrong and I really appreciated it 😭😭. Once it is healed I will schedule an appointment to get it re-pierced there.The place was clean, welcoming, and in mint condition.

Valente pierced my nose. I haven’t had a piercing since I was 9. He was the most calming wonderful guy! He was extremely nice and very professional. He was precise and made sure it was perfect. The pierceing was flawless! I honestly can’t say one bad thing except..it HURT! Haha!

Dan did a bee tattoo for me. I specifically told him I did not like one of the colors he wanted to use for the flower. The tat was going around my elbow so I could not watch what he was doing. Not only did he use rhe ugly color I told him not to use, he also put fat, sloppy green ink lines where it was supposed to be black fine lines. The bee disappears into the flower. Its the worst tatto I have ever seen. When I called to complain what a horrible job Dan did, I was told if I ever stepped foot on their property again they would call police. Dan has done some nice tats, just not great and in my case he did a lousy job. He acts like he should have artistic freedom. Hey Dan, if you want the say in what and how you do art, buy a canvas and have at itBut when you are using human skin, do what you are told. Arrogant to say the least.

My daughter had her ears pierced here. She was 7 and wanted them, so we took her to primal. The lady was very patient and explained everything to my daughter. At the end, my daughter was shocked how near painless it was.

I’ve been coming here for a couple years now because I absolutely love Dan’s work, he’s done 3 tattoos for me and even after moving 5 hours away I still make the drive up whenever I want a new one because I trust his work and love the environment at Primal

I cannot fathom how upset I am right now....I am an original customer of the owner & have had ALL of my piercings done at Primal Decor by Jason Whitcomb in the years he first opened . I moved away for almost 10 years, always stopping in when I came to town. Each time admiring how far the business had come, constantly expanding as well as all their amazing work, custom designs, custom jewelry etc. We moved back to Humboldt in November & have been very excited to start getting work done there again. Roughly 6-7 weeks ago my fiancé & I went in to the shop to find out if they would pierce my 17-year-old daughters Daith? After telling me they would with an original birth certificate and a California ID, I then informed them, the light skinned young woman (I dont know her name) that we wanted to have it done together for her birthday and that I would like to schedule an appointment for the both of us. So here we are... today its my daughters 17th birthday. My fiancé took the day off work, losing out on money to provide for our family. He stayed home to watch our 13-month-old while I took my daughter, mind you that it was a complete surprise & I was very excited about it, to get a piercing with me for her birthday present. When we showed up at 4:35 PM today for our appointment I was then told that I only made an appointment for one person. I then broke down in tears. In an attempt to compensate me for their mistake, but still putting it off on me, they offered us appointments w/free jewelry for Tuesday. But wait what about the half off piercing ??? Well Tuesday isnt her birthday, now it is no longer a surprise, I also dont have a babysitter for Tuesday. I am so angry & hurt. I did everything right, planned ahead, made an appt., confirmed the appt., showed up, brought the documents that were required for her to get pierced as a minor. I was even extra excited because piercings were half off today. BUT none of that made any difference for us because they couldnt squeeze me in to get pierced with my daughter for her birthday. I was still being told over and over again by the light skinned young woman that I only made an appointment for one person. Thinking I was crazy I even confirmed with my fiancé that I did indeed make appointments for both of us, Anna and Maddie. I am appalled at her lack of consideration for a customer, an original customer, especially a customer that was upset by something that she, an employee did/didnt do, her lack of paying attention to detail, nor giving correction information as well as her lack of accountability. Im pretty sure, in my own experiences that is, that customer service makes the world go round. As Paying customers, we help keep businesses open and operating. Not that they need me to pay for services there to stay open but the end goal is to build a consistent clientele and hope that their customer is be pleased with their service so they will return for more as well as refer them to family & friends. Am I wrong?
