I was in town for a conference and did some digging and research before deciding on King, an artist at this shop. Their work is displayed on social media and I reached out via text to schedule an appointment. King has an assistant who handles his booking, but it was pretty straightforward. $100 deposit that goes towards your total, $150 per hour, 2-hour minimum. Its been a while since Ive had an ink session but was pretty sure I would only need 2 hours for what I was getting. Once deposit was paid, I received a booking text that confirmed my time. The artist had something come up during my originally scheduled time, but gladly checked the schedule to get me in while I was still in town. There are two sections upstairs, and myself and two others were getting tattooed in one area at the same time- but it wasnt crowded and we werent on top of each other. They guys had a good vibe and energy between them and the air was light and filled with stories and laughter. I would think this would relax a nervous person, to see the artists comfortable in their spaces and happy to work.I had a small touch up on one tat and two new ones, which spanned the full 2 hours. He initially sketched out the tattoo based on my photos, but once I saw them in print and didnt like the font, he let me go through the database to find one that I did like. The tattoo behind my ear went quick and was quite painless. The one on my forearm went well too. King has a good hand and great line work. I generally go to the same artist when I like them, and if I ever get another tattoo while in Norfolk, I would book with King again.

My sister and I were walk-ins. We got tiny matching tattoos. Alejandro (I think that was his name) was very nice and made our session smooth & comfortable. I’d def go again if I were ever back in state.

Got my first tatoo with J here today. I got the Lord of the Rings One Ring script in a band and it looks gorgeous. J was patient and dilligent, making sure I was happy with 100% before getting started.I was super impressed by Js integtiry. He was straightforward and candid about the design as well as care during and after consultation, pointing out where things could go wrong even to the point of potentially costing him business. He was knowledgable, professional, and made this a great experience for me.The studio is beautiful and bright, the staff are friendly and helpful. I highly recommend getting work done by J.

Decided to find a tattoo shop that did walk ins and found this place! Immediately greeted and asked what we were looking for. Had the pleasure to get a small tattoo done by Rico. Super friendly, chill guy and did an amazing job! Definitely recommend!

Kat was great. she came in on her day off because of miscommunication between this shop and artisans I really appreciated it. And the prices on artisans website was way off with prices, but kat was professional and fair and gave me a double third eye for just about the same price as advertised.Kat also made a very responsible decision to hold off on doing my top dermal because i bled too much, plus the scar tissue (this is my third set) wouldnt budge. She told me to return in a month to try again. I only took off one star because of the lack of/miscommunication between shops. They really need to work on that! Great service as always

Did an 8hr+ tapout session with Rico. That man stayed until 430am to finish the whole piece. Very down to earth guy. TRUST me, I’ll be back!

I love Commonwealth! Ive gotten three tattoos with Marco and Im already planning the next ones. The staff is fantastic (shoutout to Mali!) and will do whatever they can to make your tattoo dream a reality. I always walk out so happy and Im not the easiest person to please! Thank you Commonwealth!!

Susan is awesome and patient. Sweet job!!! Finished product just what I was looking for. Definitely worth it. Family of 3 came in and they made it happen. Alejandro perfect job on matching compasses. Josh is super cool. Gave son first ink and is hooked now. Couldnt have had a better day! Wonderful artists and staff.

I had my tattoo done by Alejandro as a walk in and I was more than happy with my tattoo and the overall experience :) He was very thorough, light-handed, and professional. My tattoo turned out better than I expected - I would highly recommend!

Came here as a walk-in. Joshua was able to get me in and did a very clean traditional piece. He was super professional and did awesome work. Surprised to know he was only an apprentice. Would definitely recommend!

The staff is easygoing, the place is super clean, no one seems to be in a rush to get you in or out. I did a walk-in with Alejandro, and I am very happy with his art. You can tell everyone loves what they do here and ignore the one idiot on their yelp page.

I had an amazing experience at Commonwealth tattoo! Millie at the front desk is a true gem that is super attentive to your needs and organized. She’s also super fun to talk to! Ed did my tattoo and man, what a professional and easy going artist. He valued all of my input and took his time on my piece. I 100% recommend Ed to everyone whether you want something traditional or black and grey. This was my first tattoo at Commonwealth, but it will not be my last.

We were in Virginia on vacation my daughter turned 18 and wanted to get her first tattoo while in Norfolk. Brandon was our artist, he made her experience so relaxed and enjoyable. Fantastic tattoo shop!! Clean, friendly, and super chill place.will definitely see Brandon again when we are back.

20/10 RECOMMEND! Staff was extremely kind and professional. The receptionist girl Mal was the absolute best,she went above and beyond with her customer service.Not to say the least with Ed-avocado (Aritist). I came with a rough idea of what I wanted and he came back with the idea 1000x better. His work was definitely immaculate and one of a kind. I will definitely be coming back to the Commonwealth tattoo gallery!

My first time here and definitely won’t be my last! The space is calm cool and chill. Great vibes great music very relaxed. Perfect spot for tattooing. Patrick is a serious artist and you can tell he’s serious about his work. Mine isn’t done yet, but great first session!

This is one of the coolest most unique shops I’ve ever been to. Clean, good vibes, and good tunes. Everyone in the shop is friendly and super down to earth as well as talented. My whole sleeve was done by Patrick, he’s professional and artistically AWESOME! His work is solid and I highly recommend him in all aspects!!!

By far my favorite shop! Such good vibes and atmosphere. Logan is my usual artist and I always get amazing quality work with really good prices. If you’re anywhere near Norfolk I highly recommend checking Commonwealth out! Very professional and clean as well. Overall great experiences.

Went to Andy Chambers for my tattoo, and I must say it has been a great experience. Took a lot of pride in his work, and really helped me learn to take care of it afterwards as it was my first tattoo. The guys in this shop are awesome. Highly recommend coming here, whether its your first or you simply want a piece from an amazing artist.

Beautiful shop, the waiting room is downstairs and has a real homey feeling to it. The upstairs is where they take you to tattoo and it’s like an art gallery up there. The staff are really dope, friendly, and funny. I got tattooed by Sketchy Lawyer, he did a bird on my forearm, Black and grey, killed it. Would love to get tattooed by Bruce and Patrick next time I’m in. 5 stars all day.

I love this place! The people, the music, the vibe! I was more than excited for every one of my tattoo sessions. I worked with Marco on a Japanese style full back piece and let me just say he is AMAZING! If you need some Japanese inspired ink, he’s the one you want! I’m coming back for more!!!

I have been in many tattoo shops and this is the most zen spot out of all them. From walking into the front door to getting tattooed it is so relaxing. Marco has created a amazing shop, I will definitely be back to get tattooed by him again!

This is the nicest tattoo spot in the Hampton Roads area hands down. I followed Gonzo from his previous shop to finish out my sleeve. I wouldnt want any other artist touching his work. He took a bunch of random thoughts and nailed the outcome. I am so thankful for his attention to detail and patience with all my questions/requests. He killed my sleeve and Im so glad I was directed his way. I wish I was staying in the area because I would want Gonzo to do more pieces for me. 100% talent and willingness to help bring my concept to life. 5 out of 5.

The people here are really chill and friendly. The artists here are very skilled and willing to help and talk with you about what you want. The atmosphere is very laid back With an air of class. I would highly recommend people coming here to get their tattoos here. Definitely willing to work with people getting their first tattoos.

I highly recommend this tattoo shop. I had Patrick ploud ( Instagram ploudink ) do my spinal tattoo. He has a gentle hand. Very clean and explains each step in detail. If changes need to be made he will make sure it’s to the best that he can to fit your vision on what you want your tattoo to look like. Give his professional opinion instead of just agreeing. It’s clear he has a talent for what he does and a love for it. I would highly recommend him for any scripture or tattoo you’d like to get!

Patrick Loud is the only artist I trust to tattoo me. Hands down my favorite style of tattoo art. I highly recommend his professionalism and commitment to capturing exactly what’s in your mind.

Commonwealth tattoo is the only tattoo shop that I get my tattoos from. Patrick Loud is my ‘guy’ and is a true professional with amazing talent. He’s tattooed my calf/foot tattoo and my half sleeve on my arm. I highly recommend Commonwealth tattoo for all your tattoo needs!

Im about 3/4 done with a full sleeve here from Marco. They are very professional and put out high quality pieces. Definitely one of the best shops in the area. If youre looking for something custom with high quality I would recommend here. Place is a hidden gem.

Gonzo did an amazing job on my tattoo. This being my 3 tattoo was probably my best experience ever. It came out really good I’m coming back for more over time. Gonzo is that dude!

I came here because of the pictures that I saw of Gonzos work on Instagram. I the work I got was subpar at best and literally looks like I got it done at a party. Im extremely offended and upset because for whatever reason, I didnt get his best effort. A 2 session tattoo turned into 5 because he purposely messed up my tattoo. I came for a cover-up and explicitly told him that I wanted the whole thing covered. At the end of the second to last session, as Im in searing pain, he informs me that hes NOT going to cover the lines that I PAID to be covered and that they were my keepsakes. Guess whos still tattooing people after they disregarded the wishes of a paying customer?! That guy! I get that he brings the owner a lot of money but thats a HUGE red flag to me. Why was that ok? I left that day with a tattoo that wasnt done and clearly isnt even. Is it better than what was there? Admittedly yes, but I feel robbed of the chance to have a piece that Im really excited about. The owner and the gm pretended to care but its clear that they dont/didnt. I was offered a new piece and I was never contacted again, so I know it was just offered to appease me in the moment. Oh and on top of all of this, I was disrespected and berated by the front desk receptionist when I tried to call and explain what happened to me. It escalated quickly and turned into him bringing up the fact that Im a black woman and that the race card was coming. This whole experience has left a horrible taste in my mouth. The shop is admittedly beautiful but looks can be deceiving...

Didn’t even get my tattoo. Had made an appointmentsand waited 2 weeks , ED overbooked and let me know an hour of me waiting he could not do it. Rescheduled as I understand things happen, waited 2 more weeks. He didn’t even show up to the appointment . NEVER AGAIN. Rightfully got my deposit back.UNPROFESSIONAL!

Worst experience. Chambers worked on my husbands sleeve and only sketched it out in tattoo and colored some of it in. My husband has now been walking around FOR A YEAR with a sketch on his arm. Chambers will not respond to any of his messages. It’s so unprofessional and at this point we are at a loss on what to do. I do not recommend giving Chambers your money or time.

I have had work done in the past by Marco, was glad to see he is back in the area. If you want an outstanding tattoo and highly professional artist this is the place to go.
