Black Moon Tattoo

I dont typically write reviews for places, but when it comes to tattoos, you need the right place. I was recommended to come here by someone else who has visited Black Moon before for some tattoos, and Im so glad I listened. I 100% recommend coming to Black Moon, and while Im sure all the artists are awesome (based on just the social experience), Zach is fantastic at what he does. I gave him my preliminary idea over email, and while things could have went faster if I had a text sample of what I wanted tattooed ready to go, Zach crushed it by taking a font similar to what I wanted and transforming it into what I wanted the tattoo to look like. I felt bad for making the design process longer, and a little more challenging, but he was super chill about it and more than happy to help. Zach is just a fun and cool dude too! Tattoo turned out even better than I was expecting it to as well. I appreciated how he took some time to place the outline in a way that fits the outside side of my forearm since it is a weirder shaped surface to put a tattoo on I think. Shop itself was clean, and again, I had fun just being there during the designing and actual tattoo process due to the people. If you need a tattoo in the Madison area, go here. I have three in total now, the other two were done at the same place over in Milwaukee. While both places are great, I would definitely come back to Black Moon for future pieces.

Black moon is the place to go for American traditional tattoos. I’ve seen Zach for 3 tattoos already and each time he exceeds the vision I had for my tattoo. Black moon has such a great environment and every artist is cool and fun to talk to. Can’t wait to get another tattoo from Zach!

Cannot speak more highly of my experience at Black Moon! This was my first tattoo, and my artist was Derek. I wanted an outline of my dog, and what Derek sketched up from the very simple example I showed him was even better than anything I couldve asked for. The tattoo looks exactly like her! Very clean and beautifully done. The whole experience was seamless, and my mom and sister were able to sit in the back with me while I was gettin tatted up! Derek was so sweet, informative, and hilarious. If I get another tattoo in the future, Im for sure going back. Thanks Derek!!

I went here for my first tattoo, which I was nervous about. The artist (Aiden) made me feel comfortable and checked in with me throughout the process and was able to answer all my questions about care of the tattoo. Also, the tattoo looks amazing! I highly recommend

Zach is a nice dude, did a flash deal at a Harley dealership, simple line tattoo, not sure if he understands skin depths though, as he went a little deep causing the ink to bleed under my skin. Maybe he was just rushing, not sure, but regardless when you are putting a permanent peace of art on the body, you should take your time and give your best effort, especially for an $80.00, 10 minute tattoo. Wouldn’t go back or recommend.

Zach is incredibly talented and great to work with. He was super kind throughout the whole process, and really understanding of my needs and circumstances. The shop is clean and inviting. I love that there is flash to look at on the walls. I will continue to get tattooed at Black Moon, its a wonderful place!

Derek made getting an entire back piece and a half sleeve exciting. He came up with thrilling ideas for everything! I would call Black Moon Tattoo a welcoming shop with serious talent. I need to get more ink from this shop!

Aidan does dope tattoos and is easy to work with. Highly recommend him. 100% I’ll be back for more.

My friends and I had an amazing experience getting tattoos here! Derek was so nice and was able to get the four of us in on short notice! He replicated the design I wanted perfectly and I am so pleased with how it came out :)

I traveled from Utah to Madison to get tattooed by Derek. I was really excited. However I got a deadly staph infection after getting tattooed here. Derek did not properly wrap this tattoo. He used meat absorbing pads when I had a huge open wound. He didn’t even have me sign a waiver. When I reached out to Derek he said it looks irritated. Which made the infection even worse because I didn’t see the doctor sooner. They do not care about human health and safety. I do not recommend this shop.

Rye did amazing on my tattoo. It is exactly like I wanted. He even talked about doing another session when I am ready so I can add more.Aaron did my husbands tattoo he was really nice and informative about aftercare. We will be coming back for sure!

Got my first ever tattoo done here by Aidan, it was a wonderful experience. Tattoo is healing perfectly and the color is beautiful!

Have had a couple tattoos here now, always a good experience. Very clean shop, very nice artists. Aidan waters always does an amazing job. I would recommend to anyone.

Been a while since ive been around. I need to come back and get my tattoo finished by Derek!!!! He is one of my fav artists and has done almost all of my tattoos. I cant say enough about how much he cares about his clients, same for everyone else at the shop. Love you guys!!!!

I’ve been getting tattooed by Derek since I got my first tattoo for my 18th birthday! I’ve been back since atleast 10 times and every time Derek knocks it outta the park. Well priced, solid old school traditional tattoos. I got a snake tattooed across my legs, lower back and ribs (very intimate place) and dividers were put up to protect my privacy. I felt very comfortable as a woman being tattooed by Derek, and the great work keeps me coming back. I’ve also been tattooed by Aiden there, and seeing his work improve from his apprenticeship until now is incredible. Highly recommend for all of your tattoo needs.

Been getting tattooed by Zach for years (since he was an apprentice). He always does a phenomenal job and has done 2 of my favorite tattoos of my dogs. I’ve also been tattooed by Aaron who is super kind and professional. And recently got tattooed by their new guy Rye who is amazing at fine line work! I have yet to get tattooed by Derek, but I want to! These guys are always going to be in my top favorite shops in town.

Great environment. Great people. Great tattoos. Zach, Jon, Derek and Jason are all very talented and professional. They are all extremely personable and welcoming, giving each patron not only a great tattoo but also a great experience. Whether its your first tattoo or are looking to add to your collection I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND this shop!

Zach took everything I gave him and came up with such a great design that was better than I ever expected. I get compliments daily about my tattoo. Im so in love with it! Best tattoo experience I’ve ever had! Myself and 3 other girls were accepted by Zach as walk-ins, on a last minute whim. This is the type of place you go back to for all of your tattoos. Unfortunately we’re from out of town, otherwise this would be my go to EVERY time. Friendly, clean, laid back and professional, and beautiful work. My favorite and best tattoo yet. THANKS ZACH!!

Literally one of the best shops Ive ever step foot into. Zach and his crew really bring a new standard to the tattoo community. Everyone was super nice and welcoming when I walked in. They also made me feel very comfortable. If you are looking to get your first tattoo or add onto your collection you will be more than satisfied at Black Moon Tattoo.

My best friend and i left another shop dissatisfied after we could not agree on the art with the artist. black moon was quick to accommodate us for an end of the day walk-in. Derek was our artist and he nailed our tattoos. he made any adjustments we asked for and the atmosphere was very welcoming and comfortable. 10/10 would recommend

Great place with a bunch of talented artists. Shop has a laid back, boutique vibe that welcomes you in. Zach has done all my work and is always easy to work with, on time and keeps you laughing. Shop is kept very clean and never makes you concerned about sanitation or safety. If youre looking for American traditional in Madison, this is your place.

The staff was as friendly as they were knowledgeable. They answered every question in simple terms that made me feel comfortable choosing Black Moon Tattoo. The staff is also discreet and I feel safe knowing that the location of my tattoo will not be shared with anyone.

I had my tattoo done here with Derek, and it was definitely a good decision on my part. I came in around 5:20 (they close at 6) only expecting to make an appt, but he was very nice and offered to tattoo me then (it was just one word on my forearm, so it was a quick one. Still, I thought this was nice.) He was on the quieter side, but very kind and patient with any questions and adjustments. Very professional. The word I wanted was in my mothers handwriting, and he replicated it perfectly with very solid line work. Obviously this was a very straightforward, small tattoo, so take from this what you will, but I was definitely happy with the results.

This is an awesome shop that I recommend to anyone interested in getting a tattoo. It is extremely clean and the decor makes it stand out. Ive been getting tattooed now by the owner for the last three years and Ive only got good things to say about him. Genuinely cares about his clients, as well as the people that come in for the first time and is passionate about his work. The other guys in the shop are all rad artists and friendly dudes. If you are looking to get a tattoo, then you should look no further than Black Moon! Someone there will be able to help you out and I guarantee you will love what you get!

Got my 1st tattoo from Zach / 100% completely professional, friendly, and all-around cool guy / so glad I decided to go there for my first ink. Already have the 2nd one planned w/ Zach. I highly recommend this place if youre looking for your 1st, or even if youre a seasoned vet. Great Place!

I started getting work done about a year ago by Zach (at the time he worked at Spike o Matic.) He has never disappointed me. When I found out he was opening his own shop -- of course I followed him. The work he does is incredible. All 4 of the tattoers do amazing work! The place is very comfortable, clean, and professional. I wouldnt go anywhere else. Check this place out -- you wont be disappointed.

Aaron was wonderful, when I told him what I was looking for, he researched the original Picasso sculpture, when I wanted to add certain colors he showed me things I didnt see and it would have come out wrong my way. He noticed things about the original that I didnt. The detail is wonderful, great line work and it turned out better than expected which is awesome because the piece means a lot to me. Cant wait to go back next week!!!

Was able to make an appt with Rye with about a 24hrs notice. I gave him idea for a cuff and let him run with it. He did an amazing job, was super professional, and was kind enough to stay until it was complete.Shop was super nice, exactly what I would imagine and everyone there couldnt have been more professional.

I cant say enough good things about Zach and Black Moon in general. Zach does amazing American traditional and is also so easy to work with--he approaches everything with enthusiasm and its clear he puts 100% into every tattoo he does. He is up front and honest about all aspects of tattooing, which I really value. From artwork to placement, he knows his stuff and wants to work with clients to create beautiful tattoos that flow well with the body.And the shop! The aesthetic is killer, without being pretentious. The open layout is fun as you can talk with other artists and customers. And being on E Johnson there are tons of cool places nearby for drinks/dinner/shopping, and lots of people & dog watching!

Zach did a fantastic job on my latest tattoo. His communication was prompt; the visit was fun and relaxing; his rates are reasonable; and - most importantly - he performed a stellar tattoo. I will absolutely be back.

My artist was Aaron, who was highly professional and caring torwards me. I walked in on Sunday with an idea, paid my deposit, and came back on Tuesday. He happily altered his first drawing a bit to my liking, and we got started shortly after. The entire tattoo took two hours which we mostly spent talking, the game of thrones conversation was my favorite! The space was clean, and other staff was charming- making me feel at home. I could not reccomend Black Moon Tattoo enough!

It bums me out to leave a review like this but my experience was not was i was hoping or what I expected. The artist was someone other than the 3 listed on their website which was disappointing to realize after I arrived into town after traveling 5 hours to the shop. The artist (ryan?) made several obvious errors with the design of the tattoo that leave me to this day wishing I had just canceled and waited for one of the other artists. By no means is this a direct reflection of the shop but more so the skill of the artist. I am baffled that after such a tattoo he would be at such a respected and sought after tattoo shop.

Uniquely professional. F my arm still stings a little when I think about it. These artist do amazing work. Tip your artist WELL! Its worth it.

Rye did an amazing job! He was able to create something better than I had even pictured in my own mind, on a whim, from a walk in appointment. Love, Love, LOVE the end result. He is new to this area, but has been doing his art for 20 years and it definitely shows. Thank you Rye!!

Derek did mine and it was well beyond my expectation! I had a lot of ideas jumbled up but he was really patient and nice. Once I saw what he drew up for me, I immediately thought that was exactly what I had in mind. l love the tattoo and if decide to get another one, Id definitely get it from him again.

The only place I will get tattooed from now on, seriously amazing. Derek is super awesome did an awesome piece for me, owner Zach is super awesome. Anyone there will do a great job highly recommend.

There were four of us and we called on the afternoon before Easter to see if they could accommodate us. Gabe was professional and helpful and they fit us in that afternoon. Gabe was amazing and fun to work with. The staff was fun and playful with our group and very accommodating. Gabe was very careful with her procedure, and we could tell that she had a process in place for keeping things clean and using clean tools. All four of us had absolutely NO problems (no pink/redness, no reaction, no oozing....though there was a bit of whining during the procedure :p). It looked great! Gabe even texted one of us a few days later to check on us to make sure everything was ok. We loved the experience! We did it to honor my sister and her battle with cancer....it was very meaningful and special. Thanks Gabe!!

I was tattooed by Zach in December! The whole experience was super professional, he drew up exactly what I wanted and it was so beautiful and he even covered up a dumb old stick and poke for me. It’s my favorite tattoo that I have and I definitely want to go back for more

First time at this shop. Rye gave me and my husband absolutely amazing tattoos! A great shop with lots of talent who take their work seriously.

I’m pretty sad. Called on a Monday for a birthday tattoo that Friday or Saturday. Got my appointment, paid $100 deposit, and emailed what I wanted. Only to be emailed back that my artist is actually not available, no one is available, and I’ll be refunded. Ok, that’s fine, but then waiting a week for my refund and calling back to be told my refund wasn’t actually processed... maybe I just had bad luck but I got screwed in every way possible and have no tattoo.

Was a last minute walkin a couple hours before closing Rye helped me out and got to work immediately after another customer, was very quick and professional, I will definitely be going back once healed to finish it up. Rye executeded the idea and brought it to life better then imagined.

Ive gotten all of my tattoos from Derek Triangle Anderson. This new shop is right downtown by the Capital and it looks awesome. Highly recommended for traditional style work!

I loved how they treated my daughter and I, very comfortable and clean place. Real attentive as to what and how we wanted our work and willing to work within our budget. Awesome people! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

My family and I (6 people) scheduled tattoo appointments here. Then as we were on the way there (10 minutes before hand) we got a phone call telling us not to come in because he had another family of 4 that could be there before us. So, to say the least he was extremely unprofessional and rude and doesn’t deserve anyone’s business.

Highly recommend. Art and customer service is the best. He worked with me to ensure the colors matched my tastes and created a beautiful piece of art.
