Imperial Tattoos

I made a last minute appointment today to get a tattoo as an impulse. I called around to a few different places, but the shop minimums were too much for a tiny tattoo. Jon was the only person who answered my call and offered an alternative. Two small pieces for the same price. He recommended that I arrive around 5:30 and he was able to get started by 6. I am quite pleased with his light touch and friendliness. The tattoos are exactly what I envisioned. I’ll definitely consider returning for bigger pieces. I also liked the vibes of the shop and it’s location.

We had a great experience with Imperial Tattoos! We were traveling for work and 4 of us wanted to book appointments. They worked with our chaos of trying to schedule all 4. From the moment we walked into the shop, we were treated with openness and respect. Tim, John, and Glenn were all very nice and helpful. Glenn worked with me to plan out the best idea and placement. He took his time and it definitely shows in the quality! The line work is impressive and the realism mixed with my touches is even better than I envisioned! Even down to the clear saniderm put over the tattoo at the end. It has yet to peel or show any signs of being ready to come off. The best part was watching a couple movies, which was a first for me during a tattoo! The atmosphere was fun yet relaxing. I wish we lived closer so we could book another!!

This was the perfect tattoo shop for a quick walk-in while exploring the city. The artists were so friendly and really made you feel welcome. Definitely returning if we are ever back in Kentucky. 11/10

I was tattooed by Tim today, and have been tatted by him and John in the past. I can ONLY say good things about this experience. Both tattoo artist where clearly very experienced, and willing to share what they thought was best for the pieces I had selected. I truly cannot express enough my thankfulness for such talented and informed tattoo artists.

I’ve been going to Sean Smallwood for a few years now. He’s a great guy and an amazing artist. All the guys in there are hilarious and very talented. I would definitely recommend this shop!

Easily my favorite place to get tattoos. The staff is always amazing and friendly, the atmosphere is clean and comforting and they always do a phenomenal job on my pieces. Ive never had any issues. They are also super easy to get in contact with unlike a lot of other places. Ive been to quite a few other shops and after going to imperial, I cant bring myself to go anywhere else.

I’ve been to this shop 3 times now and have been impressed every time. Tim fixed a tattoo for me a couple years ago. John did my dog’s ears and birth dates on my leg last year. This year, he added angel wings next to the one I lost and I am forever grateful! Would recommend this shop to any of my friends and family!!

Such a welcoming and relaxed shop! John did an amazing job on helping to complete a half sleeve I’ve been struggling with for a while. I love the addition and filler he did and his patience in working with me was so helpful. Would definitely recommend.

When I say I travel the country to come here I mean it. I came from Minnesota in December and texas this month just to get tattooed by a few artists here. I love the atmosphere here and how comfortable it is. Amazing guys here and I will forever recommend this place

Ive had 3 tats done from this place with another appointment scheduled soon. I started using their services after numerous recommendations from friends and others. Shaun Smallwood runs a clean, creative and welcoming shop. He, personally, is in high demand (scheduling an appt with him will be a 4-6 month wait) but you can use any member of his team and they get you in pretty quickly. Ill definitely use their services again.

Just started coming here so I could get a few cover ups, and I know where I will come for now on for everything! Originally came to get worked on by the owner, but hes so good, he is booked for months. But he recommended an amazing artist there, Koal, who does badass work. Free handed an awesome, detailed clown on my arm that covers half my arm, and several tattoos, and I could not be happier. Cool dude, great work, best shop around!

My son and I came here most weekends he came home to visit. They do great work. M@ is the artist Ive been working with and the last piece he drew and put so much thought into it I was literally brought to tears when he finished. Very hospitable and empathic. Highly recommend.

I got my first, and so far only, tattoo here in 2016 and had it retouched 2 years later. The staff is always friendly and helpful. The original artist embellished a custom design Id drawn, and the artist that did the retouch made it look even better! Im happy with my experience and would definitely recommend them.

My husband and I wanted to get matching tattoos for awhile, but we were unable to find the right artist. We had emailed a few different shops in the area as we were coming into town for a few days on a short trip and wanted to schedule some time during this trip. When we made our appointment with Matt we gave him our vision in writing and a few images as inspiration. He created the perfect tattoo and then added a few tweaks to make it even more amazing, like mirroring the image so it wasn’t matching on both of us, but the sides we each had our tattoo on! Matt is an amazing artist and was great to hang out with. The other two artists that were there were amazing company as well and incredibly professional! All in all, I have never had a better experience! This was not my first tattoo and I’ve had great experiences before, but this was by far the best! My husband and I are extremely happy! Koal Berry (Koal $law) is the only tattoo artist I trust with my body. An amazing artist. He is so patient with my perfectionist attitude when it comes to applying the stencil and doing touch ups.

The best shop around in the greater Louisville area. Sean and his team are world class customer service, honest and detailed oriented artists. If you have to wait weeks or months, these gentlemen are worth the wait.

Came in with my wife, we were in the town for the night and just wanted to get a quick flash tattoo each. Can positively say I am very happy with the result of my work, but have to say I had a horrible experience with John.John did a great job at the end after a lot of back n forth he gave us exactly what we requested and did a great job.But at the end of the day I have more reasons to be unhappy with visit than happy, I understand we were walk ins, we didn’t have an appointment other than we called ahead and John fit us in, and while being appreciative of that, I have never had a tattoo artist be so argumentative with me about the placement of a tattoo and same with my wife, he had a lot of rules that he followed that I had never heard a tattoo artist use before, and I am not going to get into all that, but after explaining to him it should just be fun, and that it wasn’t a serious tattoo he continued to make us aware he just didn’t like the placement and other things, he went around in circles with us, finally said he would do it, and then his whole attitude changed and he came off very angry, I was very nervous to get the tattoo being that he seemed unhappy to do it… skip forward to placement of the tattoo he argues again until one of his superiors told him it was fine, then the worst part after that was his gun is completely silent, he gave no heads up and just start going and he is heavy handed, on a positive note he is very fast and it was a very quick tattoo.I could go on and on about unhappy I am with my experience, but I am happy with the results.I would like to add, I was very happy with the pricing, and I have a lot a tattoos in my opinion, and have been to a lot of the artist, I have had a lot of different experiences all over the states and with many different artist.John about lost me a handful of times before we even started due to his attitude but I stuck it out, I’m glad I did, I can see that he is very prideful in what he does and firm, and that was the only reason I didn’t leave right then and there.

Imperial has been a go-to for me, for maybe…2-3 years now? It makes a statement to me that not only are all the artists in this shop SKILLED? but incredibly easy to work with.John tattooed the left side of my face, and I love it more than I imagined I would! It’s an awesome experience being in that shop, because of all the support being given to each other by all the resident artists! Sean & Matt give the best quality tattoos in the state of kentucky especially with their 50+ years of combined tattooing experience. Next time I’m here I will definitely be back. The shop is very clean and they do high quality, thorough work. Sean, the owner had an appointment get cancelled and decided to work on my shoulder when he could’ve gone home for the day. Great people!

This was my first time at imperial after being tattooed by 3 different shops previously and I can confidently say this is the best experience I’ve had at a tattoo shop. Everyone is friendly and the environment is great. Glenn did my piece and not only was he great company but a wonderful artist. Definitely recommend.

This place is great! They were able to get me in for an appointment the same day. The studio is really clean and everyone was so kind and professional. I got my tattoo done by Glenn and he did such an amazing job! I will definitely come back here for my next tattoo.

I would NOT recommend this tattoo shop to anyone, especially minorities. Over priced and rude tattoo artist. They also allow guns on the premises. The artist with the huge gauges was scary. He was upset that I couldnt afford the tattoo...said I wasted his time and supplies and snatched his drawings off the counter. I left in fear and it was then that I knew I would not return. I didnt feel safe after that response.

Okay this place was the best place i’ve ever been tattooed at! John did two tattoos on me that took a total of probably 5 minutes. they were simple and small, but he did such an amazing job! Matt was awesome and the entire staff was super nice. I will for sure be back for more work. I lost my dad a couple months ago and they was sympathetic and very respectful. I was a walk-in appointment this past Friday. The customer service was amazing I got a beautiful tattoo by Matt.Unlike a few other tattoo studios that I had been trying to get into they let me know the schedule of the tattoo artist and was able to fit me in via phone. I was also able to put in a deposit. All around it was a wonderful experience that I hope to repeat with other projects in the future.

Love this place..came in from Kansas City Mo.There was 4 of us getting tattoos.. I was wanting 2. We had made appointments and they were ready for us..Matt took on my 2 and they are very well done ..he was a great guy to talk to and very gental it seemed to me ...they are exactly what I wanted and more...like I said love this place..all of the artists where great and felt like knew them forever..I cant say enough good things..thanks Matt for being great and Sean thanks for having such a great group of artists. Good line work and relatively quick service. They are nice enough, but my friend and I wanted matching tattoos and the artists didn’t really make sure they were on the same page. The coloring was not done the same way on both (different parts were different colors). But the foundation of the work is solid and the price was good.

The best tattoo artist in the city! Look know further youve found the best in the business. Theyre going to treat you with respect. The owners are such good people! Everyone there is so great, even the regulars just chilling out in the lobby not planning to get any work done. Both my mom and I had (relatively) small tattoos done by Charlie on our ankles. He is great and the work is phenomenal. I dont plan to go anywhere else for my next few tattoos! The work they have on their website just scratches the surface of the great art they produce! Stop in to see them if you dont believe me!

I enjoyed my time there. The prices are reasonable... I was there 6 hours and got a big tattoo. You expect to pay. The artists were all great. It felt like you were there with your friends. I will be back and will tell everyone who wants to listen that this is the places to go!

I researched shops in the Louisville area for weeks knowing I’d be traveling there. I settled on Imperial tattoos. I was nervous going in because I knew I’d probably be walking out with my biggest piece yet (quarter sleeve) and let’s be honest.... they’re permanent everyone’s nervous. My family was greeted by the shop owners’ wife Amanda, very nice and personable woman (I’d come back just to see her tbh 🤣) she helped all 3 of us that were getting tattoos in my family and was just really knowledgeable and helpful. I picked Sean as my artist he knew exactly what I wanted, it came out beautiful, he was quick and I have no complaints at all. This shop has a great atmosphere and great people running it.

Had an awesome first tattoo experience with Charlie a week ago! Ive been wanting this tattoo for a year now and he absolutely delivered. It has healed great and the coloring was just right. I would recommend Charlie and Imperial Tattoos to anyone looking to get a tattoo.

Matt did two tattoos for me, my 8th and 9th. This shop is probably the best i’ve been to. They’re are so nice, helpful, and you can just tell they care about the art they’re putting on your body. They’re extremely talented as well and affordable I will be back. :)

The tattoos turned out good but me and my friends were booked at 1 and we didnt get seen until 2:20. We originally were going to see Matt but he was not able to do it as he was sick so he rescheduled us with Tim. Tim came in 10 minutes late and then proceeded to talk on the phone, eat and take a smoke break in front of us before even setting up his station or reviewing our paperwork. He complained the whole time about how he was called in too early as if it was our fault. The health department was present and it seemed like an inconvenience to everyone in the shop to wear a mask, customers included. The tattooing went fine but the atmosphere and attitude was overall off putting.(in response to the owners) When we first walked in the shop nobody was wearing a mask. As soon as the health department walked in some put a mask on some did not. Tim came in 10 minutes after our scheduled appointment time and continued to run around for an hour complaining and essentially doing nothing. I understand that we would have been seen at a slightly different time but our original artist had said that Tim could get us in at 1 so we expected to get seen at one.

Great little place. We didnt end up getting a tattoo but the artist was very nice and funny. We were just a walk in and my wife couldnt decide what she wanted. He pulled out some personal sketches and other things for us to look at. He was very accommodating. I watched him finish up a scream tattoo which looked great.

Only place I will go for my tattoo work, Sean is doing my sleeve,and is doing amazing work. Everyone I meet wants to ask about my tattoo and I tell them that Imperial is hands down the best place to go in Louisville in my opinion. Sean and Amanda are like family to me, and they treat everyone that walks through their door that way .

I received a tattoo when I was in Louisville on vacation. I live in Washington State. The tattoo has errors, crooked lines, and it does not match the design I brought in. I know that an artist cannot copy a design exactly, but the design I ended up with is far from what I showed the artist I wanted. I am naïve about tattoos. This is my third. I assumed everything would work out well, I was happy, happy for what I perceived as having received friendly competent service. I signed all the forms as requested. When I got back to Washington and took off the bandage, I saw the errors, but decided to put on the second bandage, hoping when it came five days later, things would have improved. They did not. I began emailing the business. I was stonewalled initially, then told repeatedly there was no refund policy and I had signed a release to that effect. They repeated that a lot, in several emails. That I had signed a release. And they repeated over and over that they did not offer refunds. I went for a consultation to a tattoo artist in Washington state to see about fixing the errors. I was transparent with Imperial about everything I was doing and continued to press them for help offsetting the charge for fixing the tattoo here in Washington State. I received more messages to the effect I had signed a release and there were no refunds. All along, I had hoped they would work with me to help me find a reputable artist in my area, and help offset the charge of fixing the errors, which is why I consulted with the artists in Yelm, WA, and told them all about it. Finally they said to come in and they would fix it no charge. By this time, I had made it clear multiple times I live in Washington State, and coming in to have it fixed in Louisville was not an option. After a great deal more back and forth, a lot of telling me over and over I had signed a release and there were no refunds, I told them Id be filing a complaint with the BBB and putting negative reviews on Yelp and Google. Well. Then the message changed. Substantially. They said they had been discussing working with an artist I found in Washington and helping to offset the cost of a fix, but now that Id filed a complaint with the BBB that ship has sailed. There were a couple more back and forth emails communications, but as they said, that ship had sailed. And I replied, not only had the ship sailed but it was well out of the harbor. I have the complete email chain and will provide it to anyone upon request. The tattoo was $115. Thats a high price to pay for the negative impact this review, as well as the BBB complaint and the Yelp review will cost their reputation. Unfortunate all the way around for all involved. But just remember - if you frequent Imperial Tattoos in Louisville, you sign a release! And there are no refunds! And if you sign a release you have no recourse! And you sign a release! You sign a release! You sign a release! Dont forget! I just went and got a tattoo by Charlie and even with it being something small he did an excellent job and was able to help me finish the design for my full sleeve which Ill get the remaining work done by him. Excellent work. Really cool people

It was an awesome experience . I got my first tattoo done on my rib cage by Charlie . He has done both me and my girlfriends tattoos and is the coolest tattoo artist around ! He can do just about anything you ask him to do . I will definitely be coming back for more !

Screw this place I wanted my dads name on my wrist and the lady didn’t trace it she wrote over my fathers signature and she ruined the only letter I had from him. I hate this shop and that lady should be fired.

So im giving them two stars because before this last time, I had not had a bad experience here before. I went in about 4 weeks ago to get some tattoos done on my fingers. I have about other 3 tattoos on my hand already so Im aware of the healing process. The artist that tattooed me was cool but when the tattoos finished peeling about a week later, the line work was dreadful. They are the newest tattoos on my body but they look the oldest, by far. I called the shop and asked if I could get them touched up and the guy on the phone tried to explain away the poor job but said I could come in a few weeks later giving me a date and a time but never asked my name (weird but assumed they had caller ID). Fast forward, and I call to say im running late and magically my name is not down to get the tats touched up. Obviously, I was angry but if I have to go to this much effort to get something fixed that they did, im not sure if its worth letting them fix. I just wish they had taken more pride in something that is permanently on MY body.

I went to Matt with a concept, and he brought it to life. Great result exceeded expectations!

Tim did an amazing job on my tattoo! The only thing I will say negative is he was late, but it was well worth the wait as my tattoo is beautiful!

Berry Koal and Imperial Tattoos would get a 10 star rating if I could give it. I live two hours away with many tattoo shops in my area but I will be going back there for future work. The prices were great and the service was better. Thanks for the amazing work Mr. Koal!

Beware!!! Theres an $80 minimum they fail to tell you about until the tattoo is finished & its time to pay. Went there for my 18 yr old daughters FIRST tattoo and was charged $160 bucks for 2 six letter word tattoos that were the exact same. Spoke to someone on the phone that said $5 a letter for small letters. Tattoos are completely covered by a womans thumb for retrospect.Tim does Great work but $80 for a small six letter word is ridiculous!!

Really love this place, my husband and I have had several pieces done by Shawn Smallwood and we are very pleased with the outcome of his skills... we plan to revisit him very soon. And u should do the same if planning to get a new tattoo..great place, super good artist and very clean and friendly atmosphere.

Glenn gave me my first couple tattoos the other day. Absolutely loved the finished products and would give the place 10 stars if I could. Very good prices and service.

I called here to get a quote for a cover up.I let it be known that I wasnt willing to wait until May to get it done because other shops I have called are booked out that far.Guy on the phone said him and another guy at the shop have times available next week so I said OK thinking we were going to get something scheduled then he suddenly changed his tune and said something along the lines of well next shop you call dont get passive aggressive and I was confused because I just spoke concisely so as to not waste either of our time.He then proceeded to hang up on me before hearing a response...Glad he hung up because I would have hated to give this place my money after dealing with such a fragile Individual who cant discern the difference between clarity and passive.10/10 would not reccomend. Never dealt with such a trash individual at a shop before and Ive been to plenty. And I hope that wasnt too passive.

I absolutely love the atmosphere here! Charlie is a fantastic tattoo artist!!! You give him a design thats in your head, and hell draw it. If you want something unique, definitely come here!

My tattoo artist was nice but unfortunately my tattoo looks so bad. It is very spotty and one of the lines went really deep and now is raised. And I did take care of it properly but the line work is horrible! Oh and they have an $80 minimum and my tattoo is smaller then a dime!

I got my very first tattoos on Friday the 13th of Sept, although the wait was long (because of the Friday13th special they had going on) it was worth it, an Glen did an excellent good on incorporating my two tattoos that I had picked out to get..

Koal (sp) was amazing. He did a great job on an Aries tattoo that I wanted to get for my mom who passed away. The only bad thing I have to say is that we had an appointment at 5pm and didnt even start until close to 7. Part of the problem was he was doing a tattoo for someone before us . We even went to get dinner and we still had to wait. But what really upset me was that he was trying to get our pictures done and went to print to verify it was what we wanted. Some other tattoo artist started working on a tattoo design for someone that came in after us and didnt even have an appointment! We had to wait almost an hour for this other guy to put this other customers artwork together. However Koal did compensate us a little for our inconvenience. He gave us a little discount on our tattoos.

Tim did a beautiful job. My sister and I wanted something to celebrate the life of a good friend we recently lost. This meant so much to us. It was an amazing experience and I cant wait to go back!!

I got my first tattoo at Imperial and its good tattoo, but i was recently talking to my tattoo artist who moved to another shop and he was telling me that he thinks they charge more than the artists want to charge. Of course its to go back into the shop, but he was saying that they would waste money on other stuff. So over all, i think that the tattoos are really good, but its kinda pricy.

I got so scared to the store because Ive always wanted to make a tattoo but everyone said it hurt !! ... IT HURTS!!!I was attended by Glen, the artist who did it to me and made me feel very comfortable, despite I was very restless customer 🙈🙈and the other artists were also super friendly and professional !!! And also I Love my tattoo!! Thank you guys!!!

Charlie gave me my first tattoo. He killed it. A wonderful color piece Im memory of my late mother. Its a big deal. No one was gonna do this piece but Charlie at Imperial. We have a gem in our city folks. He works at Imperial.

This shop is very sterile and the atmosphere is chill.I live 2 hours away but still drive here to get a tattoo by Charles Browy. His artwork is extremely creative and outstanding! Ill definately be getting tattoos from him until he retires.

I had a Z-shaped scar on my lateral wrist where I got it caught in a van door closing on it... I went to Imperial, showed my scar to Tim, and he made the coolest, cutest dragon tat out of it! I will def go back again! Thank you Tim!!

Sorry Dave but you suck! I dont want it to look like 90s tribal. No problem bull$£*+. Its horrible and now permanently on my body. He was looking at the picture the entire tattoo. Super simple line design. I can just freehand it no you cant. Not one straight line.
