I love it at Sanctuary!! This is a literal safe space, so every kind of loving person is welcome! This is my 3rd tattoo with Karpa and they never disappoint. They are so thorough with their collaboration, and I always love their own personal artistic style and how they bring my ideas to life. The shop is always clean and I always feel safe and taken care of. This is a great place for any meaningful tattoos you are looking to get, but also always the funnest flashes in town! You won’t regret trusting Sanctuary with your next tattoo!

This was honestly the BEST tattoo experience, and I cant recommend Ashley (Karpa) enough! She was so welcoming and easy to talk to. She brought to life a tattoo that I’ve wanted for a long time, and I absolutely love how it turned out thanks to her artistic style! 😍 I’ll definitely be going back to her in the future.A general review of Sanctuary itself: the place is super clean and has a fun vibe to it. The other staff that were there that day were friendly and created a really welcoming environment. Just an overall great experience!

Absolutely THE BEST experience 🥹I have such anxiety, and worry .... in general. But ...I decided to get a Sternum tattoo. I am so glad I found Sanctuary Tattoo and most specifically, Ashley Karpa! She was immensely kind and put me at ease, always checking on me to make sure I was comfortable... including the scheduling and planning process. She helped walk me through everything... answered all my questions. The shop is cozy and clean, she made sure we had privacy and was just incredibly kind and sweet. She is an Amazing artist and I definitely will be coming back for more pieces. I would also like to note Im a plus size lady, quite big, and the table held me just fine and I had no worries about it. This place is also very safe and welcoming. The other staff I met are just as sweet. I honestly wish I could think of a better way to put all the loveliest words together to describe this experience. I am so happy with my beautiful piece 🥰

I have been tattooed by 2 artists at Sanctuary now and my experience has been nothing short of fantastic. The atmosphere is safe and welcoming. My most recent tattoo was with Ashley (Karpa) and her work is phenomenal. I have been following her as an artist since she first started and I am so happy that I get to have her work on my body.

I had the BEST possible experience at Sanctuary for my first tattoo! Ashley (Karpa) is such an amazing artist and incredibly kind person. She made me feel so comfortable throughout the process of finalizing the design and placement of the tattoo - she is so talented, and I could not be happier with my result! The appointment was so smooth and easy, the tattoo space is so comfy, and I was offered snacks/water/care throughout the experience. Now, a month or so out from the appointment, my tattoo is healed and I can’t wait to return for another design as soon as possible! Thank you SO MUCH, Ashley!!!

This is by far the best shop on the city. I personally go to Ashley Karpa, and have been for about three years now. Her work is unmatched and she is absolutely wonderful. The environment at the shop is welcoming, kind, comfortable and safe. Everyone who works here is lovely. I highly recommend getting tattooed here everyone is a wonderful artist and person.

Karpa (Ashley) was dope as hell. She made on the spot changes to the design, was super patient while we moved the piece around while debating size, shape, and overall placement. She added her own flare to the piece while respecting the original inspiration and honoring any thing we pushed back on. She understands that it’s her art but your body, so while she had some dope ideas, she’d prefer YOU love the piece cause you have to love with it.Would highly recommend when you’re in the area

The best tattoo experience I’ve had! Ashley was patient and helpful, and we were able to adjust the designs together. Her designs were beautiful, and we were able to get the placement perfect. I’ve already gotten so many compliments on the tattoos and their placement. I also enjoyed the clean and welcoming environment, I will absolutely be back!

Best tattoo experience ever!! I got the biggest tattoo I have ever gotten in an area that is arguably more uncomfortable compared to other areas, but I thought the experience was way more tolerable than any of my previous small tattoos! I was tattooed for about 3 hours and did not need any breaks due to pain. My artist was Ashley Karpa and she was incredible. Very easy to work with and was more than willing to adjust and accommodate to me through the whole process. Highly recommend this studio and Ashley as an artist.

Sanctuary is such a wonderful, welcoming, queer friendly space with the absolute best tattoo artists in Pittsburgh! I’ve been tattooed by Suz and Karpa now and I keep coming back for more.

Susie has been my tattoo artist for years now and I dont have enough positive words for herself or her art. I am honored to have her artwork on me and to have been able to watch the growth of herself as an artist/person, as well as Sanctuary Pittsburgh. Susie and the team have created such a welcoming space full of art and creativity. I have recently gotten work done by Karpa and she brings so much passion, fun, and amazing artwork to the studio as well! I am constantly getting compliments on my tattoos and always tell to go see Susie and the team at Sanctuary Pittsburgh!

Susie has been the only person I’ve trusted to tattoo me and has done all 3 of my large pieces! I have pretty significant social anxiety and am also super introverted, and I have never felt uncomfortable during any of our appointments. She is incredibly talented and even while I was post partum struggling with body issues she created art that has made me feel more comfortable again in my skin! I am so happy with how all three of my pieces have healed up and would recommend her to anyone looking for talent but also a great person!

Sanctuary Tattoo is SUCH an awesome place with great vibes! Ashley (Karpa) did an amazing piece on my upper arm (passport stamps of all the international countries I have visited so far) and it turned out EXACTLY as I wanted it! She has a very light touch and is so talented at fine line tattooing. She was so informed about the process and answered all of my questions intentionally and wholeheartedly. She worked with me to make sure the design was exactly how I wanted it and was patient with me the entire time. Ashley created a really warm and safe space that allowed me to feel only joy in getting my tattoo. I wasn’t rushed or pressured, she let me take my time with getting coffee and taking breaks, and she communicated with me throughout the whole process. She provided detailed information about taking care of the tattoo after she finished as well. She’s also just so funny; she’s a great storyteller and uses the art of *distraction* to hide any pain you may feel, and I barely felt any. She really created the best experience for me getting my biggest stop yet! I will absolutely be going back to her and Sanctuary!!

This place is so cute, cozy and welcoming. I felt very comfortable and listened to throughout my experience. My artist, Ashley was amazing and made sure I was comfortable and able to put input in on any changes or placement every step of the way. If youre looking for a comfortable place with good vibes where they will make you feel like your tattoo AND your experience are both of top priority, this is your spot. So many talented artists, you will not regret checking them out. Plus lots of cute stuff to do/ check out in that area.

I visited back in December with my mom and sister and we all had a great experience. The studio is very inclusive and welcoming. We booked with Karpa and she was amazing! My sister has tons of tattoos but this was my moms first and she made all of us feel comfortable regardless of our experience. We didnt have a lot of tweaks we needed for our design or stencils but Karpa made it very clear that she would be more than willing to make ANY adjustments requested. She also made it very clear that we could request a break at any time. I would highly recommend her, especially if youre new to getting tattooed or nervous about the process. I love her dot work style and she executed our request in her style beautifully!

Iggy is awesome! I had my first tattoo scheduled with them today and they made my experience so amazing. They walked me through the process and was very patient with me. Plus my tattoo is absolutely beautiful; I’m so excited about it and will definitely be back for more soon!

Ive been tattooed by Karpa and Suz so far at Sanctuary, both are extremely talented artists who are wonderful to deal with.My latest tattoo was a dot work style dog memorial done by Karpa. They were so gentle and light handed that it felt like a pen going over my skin.I highly recommend Sanctuary to anyone who is looking for fine line work, dot work and many other styles. Every artist there is fantastic to deal with and overall its a great place to go to.

Every experience at the Sanctuary is nothing short of incredible. I’ve been tattooed by Karpa on multiple occasions, and she is so extremely talented. She is very attentive to your needs and truly listens to your vision as a client and what you are aiming for with your tattoos. I am constantly blown away by her work and am always receiving compliments on my tattoos done by her. Karpa is definitely my go to artist, and I’m certainly not going anywhere any time soon. The Sanctuary is a comforting, welcoming place and everyone there makes you feel like a long time friend.

My experience here was UNREAL. Ashley added onto an existing tattoo that I felt needed a bit more going on to really round out the piece. I had no idea what I wanted and was really only able to give her some key words for the vibe that I was going for. When I came in, she had somehow been able to draw up the PERFECT tattoo. She checked in with me often to make sure I liked where the piece was headed and I definitely felt taken care of. During the process, she was a great conversationalist and really made me feel at ease, as did the other artists in the studio. My tattoo came out BEAUTIFUL. Ashley was fantastic and I will absolutely be going back to her for my future tattoos, as well as recommending this studio to anyone looking for a tattoo. Thanks, Ashley!!

If I could give Sanctuary 100 stars, I would in a heartbeat. Suz is an absolute rockstar artist. Every person at the shop made me feel comfortable and safe. Suz has such a gentle touch that I barely felt most of the four tattoos I received. Not to mention that the shop is queer-friendly, so you can be your absolute self here without fearing judgment. I HIGHLY recommend Sanctuary.

I got a beautiful first tattoo from Susie when she did a flash fundraiser for Planned Parenthood; communication was great and she did an excellent job demystifying the process. Her technique is skilled and she has a gentle hand, I wouldn’t hesitate to get a first tattoo at Sanctuary. I love her work and the shop is really welcoming.

Ive been very fortunate to be tattooed by many talented artists, but haven’t had an experience like the one I had at Sanctuary. I immediately felt welcomed and comfortable with my tattoo artist (Ashley Karpa), who took on a project when she did not have to. She took the time to show me option, sizes, add on, placements, and arrangements before we even put the stencils on to make sure I was comfortable with it. The whole tattoo process went smoothly as ever. My arm doesn’t feel beat up or sore after a 2 1/2 hour session. But the reason I will return is Karpa’s energy. She’s just an all around good person who really cares about her clients. I’m already planning my next tattoo.

Honestly cant say enough good things about Sanctuary! Ive been tattooed my Susie twice now, each time Ive went its been a great experience. You feel safe, its clean & shes a 10/10 tattoo artist (especially if you are looking for black and white). Looking forward to eventually being able to get back on to her books again once they open. If you arent into tattoos check the shop out anyways! They have such fun & unique pieces.

Got my first tattoo with Karpa from her Pride flash and could not have had a better experience. She was extremely welcoming and friendly. She made sure I loved the tattoo size and placement and was comfortable throughout. It was a fun experience and I will be back!

I got a last minute walk-in script tattoo from Ashley Karpa and she was absolutely incredible!! She kept checking in to make sure I was comfortable and to check if I needed anything. She was a doll from start to finish. The vibes were immaculate in the shop as well! It smelled amazing and felt so homey. I would without a doubt go back and recommend to anyone and everyone :)

Went for matching tattoo with my daughter and (Ashley) Karpa was so awesome. She made sure we loved the design before, during and after. She made sure we were always comfortable (even down to the level of music). I love how friendly and casual everyone at the shop was. Karpa really took her time to explain exactly how to care for the tattoo and dressing. I loved my first tattoo by her so much that I scheduled a full sleeve next month and went to the Pittsburgh tattoo convention today to grab 2 little flash pieces as well. I absolutely adore Sanctuary as both a tattoo shop and a vintage store. I’ve been tattooed here by some of the previous artists that worked there and also by Karpa who’s still at the shop! Every experience I’ve had there has been wonderful! Everyone who works here is so queer friendly and it’s definitely one of the most identity affirming shop experiences I’ve had! The tattoos I’ve gotten from here are all wonderful and the artists are so professional and fun to talk to! I had my first tattoo done here, and I cannot recommend the shop more (especially Karpa!)! I also love doing gift shopping while Im there! theres a great selection of jewelry and clothing, and an online store in case you cant make it in person!

I snagged a last minute cancellation appointment with Susie and she treated me like I was a long-standing client with her, which had made me definitely want to be one. Susie herself provided such a warm environment and was so easy to talk to. Susie even made the tattoo I was getting work with my existing tattoos and offered her ideas on how to make everything a full piece. The shop itself is a marvel and everyone else who works there was equally as friendly and welcoming. I’ve never walked out of a tattoo shop knowing 100% I’d go back but I was so pleased with my overall experience that I know I’ll be going back.

Ashley Karpa-Strang at Sanctuary made getting my first tattoo a wonderful experience! I wanted quite a large and unique forearm sleeve even on the first go. Ashley worked with me to take my ideas and create a design that looks just like I want! I got a tattoo from Jay and the experience was amazing. They are an amazing artist. Would highly recommend for any critter tattoo. I usually dont go for cute or whimsical tattoo but Jay knocked it out of the park. I had a very limited idea of what i wanted to get - just an axolotl in a beanie. Their design was so much than I could have ever imagined. They were very fast in the actual tattoo process and their machine was fairly quiet. They were very accommodating to the large group we had and were very clean. Would highly recommend all around.

One of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had while getting a tattoo! Susie goes above and beyond to make her clients feel welcome and heard. She made my vision come to life and I’m so happy I’ll have this artwork on me forever! I will forever travel to be tattooed by Susie and her other artists. I love this place SO MUCH. I’ve gotten three tattoos from Jay Ivy and am repeatedly astonished with both the tattoos and the welcoming environment they’ve created for their clients. Jay’s mega talented, kind, and manages to be someone who is easy to talk to and someone who is comfortable to be quiet around — and every time I’ve been there, they have blown me away with incredible tattoos. 10/10 would recommend, 10/10 will be back.

Susie is ultra professional and I couldn’t be happier with the tattoo I got. I went on a flash day and emailed a week or two later with some concerns about how it was healing. She emailed me back and got me in quickly to rectify it. I’d been expecting her to fix a few lines and call it a day but she added new parts and made it something really special. I’d also recently undergone very invasive surgery and she seems very knowledgeable about tattooing over scars-excited to return once I’m fully healed. The whole experience felt very safe and respectful.

I love working with Karpa! She totally gets my vibe, my vision for custom pieces, and has the best flash sheets. Super easy to talk to during appointments, a true delight. My go-to artist in PGH!

Sanctuary is the cutest shop - Susie is super welcoming and the whole atmosphere is calming. Really cool vintage items in the front (will be back to shop for sure!) and tattoos/gallery in the back. Was there twice to be tattooed by Amber, who is also an incredible human. Definitely stop in if you’re in the neighborhood!

Ive been tattooed here by Jay Ivy twice now and the experience has been excellent both times - Jays art is lovely (highly, highly recommended for all of your animal tattoo needs!), and both of my tattoos have healed easily and very well.

I have now had a few ~4 hour sessions here with Susie and I honestly cannot say enough amazing things. The vibe is so chill and relaxing — truly somewhere you actually WANT to be. It’s always super clean & the decor/layout is 🔥. Ciarra is the sweetest and has such an awesome eye for style. Susie is just THE BEST. Hands down. During each session, we hardly stopped talking. Personal, sad, exciting, happy...it was all covered. She’s extremely easy to chill with, even while creating such incredible art. Her work speaks for itself. Went to this shop for the first time and had an appointment with Ashley Karpa. Super great/comfortable experience. Everyone was very welcoming, you can tell they want you to have a good experience while you’re there. Highly recommend this shop.p.s. Ashley also does AMAZING work!!!

Susie Humphrey does amazing tattoos, she makes the whole experience comfortable. They sell really great things too - bought a projector and camera from Sanctuary. Highly recommend!!!

Great experience. Had a whale of a time 🐳! Clean, professional and friendly. Sanctuary is a unique and special place. Tattoo healed quickly, and it was a good experience in the chair. Studio director couldnt have been better to work with. Definitely recommend.

Beautiful space. Her tattoo studio is private and comfortable and I cant wait to do yoga there as soon as Im back! Her store has so many amazing things if youre looking for something one of a kind especially. Definitely go check it out if youre in the area

Susie’s new shop is top notch! Clean atmosphere...it’s a must check out if your into antiques, yoga, and or getting a tattoo. Susie is by far the best tattoo artist and the only tattoo artist I’ll go to!
