Salt Water Tattoo

From booking to completion this shop is the best. Joey Ilardi worked around an existing tattoo to create an awesome sleeve. He worked with my schedule and I was able to get the whole sleeve done in the time constraints I had. The shop is always clean and the artists make it a fun environment to be in.

Very cool, clean shop and the artists do amazing traditional work. Great selection of flash tattoos. My only complaint was that my artist Brandon had a very heavy hand while moving around to tattoo. I bruised pretty bad from the roughness and I think also because I was laying down for the tattoo. He did a great job otherwise 👍

Matt is insanely talented and a really cool dude all around. He rocked this panther out in under 20 minutes and blew my mind with both his speed and technical abilities.My first experience in the shop was a great one, and I will definitely be coming back!

Just a fantastic shop and experience all around. Everyone was super welcoming and fun and I could not be happier with the tattoo that Mike gave me. Very, very clean shop, too. In terms of price, they are extremely reasonable given the work they do. I’d happily travel the three hours to get here to get another piece done.

I’ve lived in and been getting tattooed in Virginia Beach/Hampton Roads on and off since 2003, right around the time tattoo shops started being legalized in the area. That being said, I’ve watched the community and amount of shops grow exponentially in that time. I can say with certainty, that Salt Water Tattoo is far and away my choice for the best shop in Hampton Roads. While I do believe there are plenty of other great shops and outstanding artists in the area, I don’t think there’s another shop that’s quite as stacked with the talent that SWT is. Beyond just being insanely talented, it is far and away the most inviting and accessible shop in the area. Going into a tattoo shop can be an intimidating event for many people. Especially for people who maybe aren’t sure how the process works, how the pricing is determined, or maybe are looking for that first tattoo, etc. This is where I feel like Salt Water breaks away from the competition. I’ve never seen such an inviting environment anywhere else. Each artist is easy to talk to and can draw up requests for potential clients while making them feel respected, heard, and like they belong. That goes a long way when making a decision as serious as who to have permanently put their artwork on you. If nothing else, if you’re interested in getting tattooed, swing by the shop and talk to an artist yourself. You won’t regret it.

This shop is one of the best I’ve been to. The atmosphere is amazing and the artists are great! I’ve had two done by Matt Nelson and I absolutely love them. If you’re looking for a bold traditional style he’s your man.

I got tattooed by Joey at a tattoo convention a few months ago and swung by today and got tattooed by Tony for their Summer Flash Event. The shop was super clean and a very inviting atmosphere. Top notch work from both of them, and I can’t wait to get tattooed by the rest of the artists at the shop!

As a female, I have never felt more welcome or respected in a tattoo shop. I have been coming here for about 5 years-tattoed by Joey, Mike, & Tony. The shop is clean, the guys are friendly and have always made me feel like a part of the conversation in the shop. Mike feels more like family at this point as he has done the majority of my work. I get compliments often on my tattoos & refer anyone who asks to Salt Water Tattoo.

I get tattooed by Matt Nelson regularly, and have also been tattooed by Tony. The talent and skill the men who work here have is absolutely unmatched. They’re the definition of traditional and if I had to choose one shop to get tattooed at for the rest of my life, it would hands down be Salt Water. I highly recommend them to everybody.

First tattoo experience. I went to SWT by way of reaching out to Joey Ilardi directly on Instagram. I had been waiting awhile before moving forward with my first tattoo and Joey met with me for a consultation appointment and deposit. The location itself is great, super clean and everyone in the shop seems to have a lot experience, as well as their own style to offer. Been to tattoo shops all over and if you’re reading this, you’re probably a service member looking for a good shop. I’m telling you now, go somewhere else. This is the most expensive shop I’ve ever received work at in my life. The guys are not friendly, they rush you through the design phase and get super pissed if you don’t like the first drawing they come up with, almost make you feel guilty to want something other than their first attempt at your body art idea... No collaboration, no customer service, and the worst prices possible. Sad to think how many young Sailors have got ripped off here because the shop thinks a couple hours of their time is worth a grand. Or an hour is worth 500… then they wonder why people are starting to go elsewhere.

My first tattoo and Im so pleased with how it turned out. My artist, im sorry I forget his name(a young man from Argentina) was gracious and took my idea and gave me exactly what I was thinking. Thank you!

The most professional tattoo shop in Hampton roads, that employees nothing but killer artists. Walk in or set up an appointment with anyone in there and they will take great care of you!

Astonishingly beautiful work! Very professional shop with a great atmosphere. Artist was extremely accommodating and brought my vision to life perfectly with his own design. I felt very comfortable and confident throughout the whole experience. My girlfriend was also tattooed today on a walk in with me and she feels the same. Highly recommend this shop! Id give a sky full of stars if I could but I suppose 5 will do!

Saltwater is the best street shop in Virginia Beach and is up there with the other killer shops in Hampton Roads. From the ownership to the artists to the flash on the wall. Roll in for a real tattoo experience and leave with a sick tattoo.

I Walked-In to the shop eagerly looking get some cloud shading to fill in some sporadic empty spaces on my arm and two very helpful gentleman greeted me. They patiently but attentively listened to me as I showed and explained to them what it was that I wanted. They were very friendly and professional, and they quickly understood exactly what I was that I looking to have done and they were able to accommodate me on the spot.Brandon Does phenomenal work and great group of true professionals I trust any of them and I will certainly be returning. Got three stars for super chill atmosphere and giving me exactly what I wanted and being cool about it despite the circumstances.... BUT.... $240 for this lil thing...? I understand ink use and placement go into it... But I have a shoulder tattoo quote that is three times as big but cost me $100. I definitely felt very taken advantage of, but artists are allowed to charge whatever they want, so I just rolled with it.

I walked in needing a very sentimental tattoo fixed from a previous shop’s mistake. They were able to get me in quickly and now my special ink is perfect thanks to their superior level of care!

My mom and I were visiting Virginia Beach for vacation (all the way from Texas!). We finished dinner one night and randomly decided to get tattoos. Salt Water was recommended to us, we called and Tony told us to come on in! He and Mike were finishing some tattoos up when we arrived. The place is nice and clean with a cool aesthetic. Tony did my tattoo and Mike did my moms. We wanted matching but not identical and we got exactly what we wanted! Thanks so much guys for a warm welcoming experience AND for some fun facts about VB!

This shop is absolutely the best, I’ve been under the hand of Mike, Tony, and Brandon (MOSTLY BRANDON). Even a couple years later and my work looks incredible! Any time I get a compliment the first thing I say is “ Salt Water in VB” because saying thank you wouldn’t give them the justice of the beautifully incredible work they gave to me! Thanks again guys! Had a great time getting tattooed here. Initially came in with 3 guys while up here for the night, but decided just to scrap our initial idea and just decided to get what I’ve been wanting. Super chill atmosphere, great artists and conversations flowed during the tattoo. Hard to find a good shop doing traditional these days.

This place was recommended go us by friends and I am happy we went. There were 5 of us here for vacation and wanted to get some tattoos. Most of us went to Mike. He was absolutely amazing. Took his time to make sure we liked sizing and placement. The tattoo shop was very clean with a cool atmosphere.

Stopped by while on vacation with my family to get a family too, tattoo hurt very bad the next day, a week of now having the tattoo whenbeing home i went to go get looked at and i have a staph infection from contaminated ink.

First of all I cant thank Brandon enough! Any negative reviews about Salt Water are bogus! I have lived here my whole life and the people at Salt Water are the realist tattoo artist period! What started as a cereal box tattoo joke turned real. Family got together and lightning struck Staff and artist was helpful and fast and professional in our crazy.Need a tattoo on the random or something specific in mind give them a call set the ink in motion.

I have other tattoos and was referred to this establishment by a friend. I gave the artist Mike an idea and he ran with it, the whole experience was great and I’ve already scheduled my next appointment for more. Pricing was great as well. I highly recommend making an appointment because they do take walk ins and it was non stop once they opened up.

Went in for 2 simple black small tattoos. It took all of 10min of tattooing and maybe 10min of prep time for each of us and it was $250.00 each that’s like $12.50 a min for roughly 20 total minutes. We was told to be back at 6pm we waited longer in the lobby than we were in the chair. Definitely won’t be back

I got a beautiful tribal turtle design here 2 years ago and I loved it!! I went in as a walk-in, and was told what time to return. That visit was worth 5 stars!! I went in as a walk-in yesterday and explained what I’d like to have done. (A small coverup over a 1 & 1/2 inch tattoo over my elbow). I was told to be back in the building by 6:00 but “keep my phone on in case there was an opening sooner”. I arrived at 5:30 only to discover that a bachelorette party of 5-7 people walked in and were in the process of getting their tattoos done. At 5:45 I asked what time mine was scheduled for and I was told “it’s still 6:00”. I sat and waited until 6:45 before I decided to leave. Meanwhile, others came and went, made appointments, had their ideas discussed etc. What finally got to me was hearing someone call another “walk-in” on the phone and tell them to come on in, an artist was ready for them. I still waited after that phone call before finally walking out the door. I guess they didn’t notice til 6:55 that I was gone because that’s when I had a missed call from there. I was really looking forward to having another one done. And it would have been worth the wait, I’m sure if only I was acknowledged and not ignored.

My tattoo still looks brand new. It gets the most compliments. I got a MF DOOM tattoo here and I love it. Exactly what I wanted. Great knowledgeable staff too.

Decent tattoo artists, but they have some of the worst customer service I’ve ever seen anywhere. If you want a tattoo so badly that you’re okay with being talked out of your entire initial design and possibly being belittled the second you walk in the door, then this is the place for you. I’ve gone here multiple times but I definitely will be taking my business else where after this last experience.

My husband and I were in Virginia Beach for his birthday during the Memorial Day weekend and I spontaneously suggested that we get tattoos. After doing some online research, we called Salt Water Tattoo and were told they were accepting walk-ins. Brandon did my infinity tat in memory of my grandmother and Mike did my husbands. He wanted a twist on the laugh now cry later masks and neither of us were disappointed. The shop was clean, everyone was professional and Brandon will definitely be seeing me again.

Awesome place!!! Brandon is hands down the total best! 3 of us walked in he got 2 of the tattoos done that night and mine the next day!! Got my first side piece so as u can imagine it was super large he had it drawn up perfectly and did my outline within 2 hours!! From Pittsburgh and am going back down in a few weeks for him to finish my color and shading!! Brandon and the coils others I meant were so cool, laid back and friendly!! Give the guys and shop a 10+ see you soon!!

This review is for work done by Matt Nelson.When I came in and did a walk in, I was quoted $340 for my piece. It was about $90 more than I was expecting it to be. I know you pay for what you get when it comes to tattoos and the quality was 10x better than I had hoped for.I want to add that I came in with an idea of what I wanted and the first draft Matt presented me far exceeded my expectations.I am more than satisfied with what I got and cannot wait to find a gap in my busy schedule to book again for another piece from this artist.Google doesn’t have enough stars this particular visit.Thanks again Matt!

I love this place. I have had three tattoos done here by three different artists (including a coverup) and they all turned out great. The only reason I wont give it 5 stars is the inconsistent pricing and the guy that is there to greet you on the weekends. My biggest tattoo (the coverup) cost $160. Mike did that one and I had an amazing experience. Note, I did deal with the artist directly and on a weekday for that one. Cue the front door man and things get weird. My second tattoo was about half the size of my first one with less detail. After the artist was done he asked me what front door man quoted me (Shouldnt you know this since he supposedly went asked YOU how much it will cost?) I told him the truth ($160-$180) and he decided on the middle price of $170. My third one was a simple one line sentence, front door man quoted me $120 for that one. The artist told me $80 , I always tip well for good service so I went ahead and gave him the $120 plus $20 of what I had took out to tip. I understand that tattoo prices can vary because of size, placement, time it takes, etc. But front door guy is a bit much and seems unnecessary, it almost makes me think he gets a general quote from the artist and raises the price to pocket the extra. I could be wrong, its just the feeling I have gotten after dealing with him. Long story short, if you want good work from awesome artists I definitely recommend this place. Just try to avoid front door man and work directly with the artist if at all possible. You will know who Im talking about when you meet him; kind of manic, rude, and has the personality of a car salesman.

I drive 2.5 hours to get tattooed by these guys. I’ve got the most experience working with Matt and he’s a epic guy who will treat you with the utmost respect. With that being said you’re guaranteed a good tattoo regardless of whose chair you end up in. I never leave reviews for anything, but these guys absolutely deserve the recognition. Mike was wonderful and helpful, even though I changed tattoo on him from when I went in to reserve a spot. He was totally understanding and drew out a wonderful tattoo that I love. They were all super nice and really funny. I would highly recommend hitting them up when you want some new body art.

My friends and I came down for vacation and of course, we wanted to get small pieces done before we returned home. We were warmly greeted by the artists in the shop (Tony and Joey). Super friendly and great at conversations. Our pieces came out great. Lines aresare and done with precision. Completely satisfied with our experience. If you are in town with family and/or friends and want to get tattoos to remember your experience, I highly recommend coming here.

My friend and I went to Salt Water today after we visited 4 other more studios, where we left disappointed and mad. It was an amazing experience. All of the staff members were very professional and happy to work with us. I rarely write reviews but I had a great experience at Salt Water Tattoo, Matt has tattooed me multiple times now and always makes me comfortable and is very professional. The shop it self is very clean and the other artists are nice and welcoming. As long as Im in Virginia Beach I will always go to Salt Water Tattoo.

Joey did two matching revolver pieces for both my husband and I and they are fantastic! The attention to detail and color blends are wonderful. Stevens western revolver is badass. I also got a Marge Simpson tattoo and the line work on her is terrific. Youd be honored to get ink from this amazing place.

I cant recommend Mike Richards enough. If youre getting tattooed, youre doing it wrong if you dont let Mike add to your collection.

Have been into the general booth location several times checking out different design ideas. Each time the guys in the shop helped make me feel very comfortable even without being there to get a tattoo that day. The last time I walked in tony Riccio helped me understand what would work with my idea and what wouldnt. He then drew up something using my ideas and his expertise and I couldnt have been happier. Brandon did both of my tattoos, and if I get any more, I will be returning to work with him again. He is very accommodating and has an amazing artistic vision that he incorporated into both tattoos. The place is great and the artists are very experienced.

Me and 3 friends wanted an impulsive, yet significant finish to our vacation and Salt Water Tattoo made that possible! 1st come 1st serve walk-ins are fair and too the point. Artists offered creative suggestions without being pushy, which i appreciated. Staff were talkative and made it comfortable. Took maybe 45 minutes for 4 tats for 4 people.

If you’re in VABeach and want a traditional tattoo applied with time proven application techniques, Saltwater is the place to go. You don’t have to make an appointment. Instead you can just walk in, talk to an artist, have them draw it up, and when it’s done you’ll walk out knowing it’ll look great for years. I have two tattoos from Tony and will be going back to get another from Brandon or Mike. The whole shop kills.

Tony, Mike and the gang are awesome. When you go to a shop like this, the art on the wall will be your inspiration and these dudes will make you something original and amazing. Dont be afraid to take your craziest ideas here and have them turn them into reality. My wife and I have several tattoos by Tony in particular and Ive got plenty of space for more. New Shop, but dont get it twisted, Tony and Mike themselves have years of knowledge and skill under their belts. Youre talking about two individuals who truly care about the history and progression of tattooing. Ive been getting tattooed by Tony for almost ten years, and he wont say this about himself, but he is one of the best in the game. He is seriously a hidden gem within the tattoo community. He works incredibly hard and you can see it in his tattoos. His attention to detail and artistic ability expands beyond what you can find on the internet. He also cares about tradition and doing things the right way. All four artists in the shop design and paint their own flash. Simple things like this truly show how important this culture is to them. Theres a lot of tattoo history dating back to the 20s in Hampton roads, these four artists are preserving that art and the traditions that follow. These are not one trick ponies. This is a legit walk in shop that can do anything you want, and do it the right way. They will also give you the information you need to make sure you end up with the best possible tattoo. Go in, talk to them, get tattooed... ask them to tell you stories. Youll be amazed by the knowledge, skill, professionalism, and overall fun these guys can provide to their clients. I stopped by this humble looking shop wanting to browse a few of the artists books. Dont let the strip mall look fool you. From the time you walk through the doors you can tell these guys mean business. Every inch of the shop is covered with beautiful hand drawn scetches or paintings. You instantly be able to tell its a well established shop, that these artists have made their home. The next thing youll notice is the level of cleanliness in the shop, and the pride they take in it. You can smell it in the air! I was greated by a few of the artists, talked about what I wanted, and they set me up with the right guy for the job. From the moment I made the deposit, till the tattoo was complete, the overall experience was astounding. Each artist has access to eachothers books. So if you forget the time of your appointment (like I did) anyone of them can get you the information you need. 10/10 would recommend. Ask for Brandon, you wont regret it.

My wife and I came in to the shop with an idea for a couples type tattoo. Mike was already doing another tattoo at the time and he stopped and answered all of our questions. He took the time to understand the meaning of our design and said he could fit us in in a couple of hours. He texted and said he was ready and we came back in. This was my first tattoo and I was a little nervous. We talked it through and it turns out we are from the same area of the country and he knows a lot of the same people that I do. The tattoo went flawlessly and I couldnt be more happy.

I just had Monarch Chrysalis tattoo today by Joey but Brandon Webb had my original drawing. He draw his own base on mine ( I made clear that it should be specifically Monarch cocoon) but what I saw seems different than what they put on my arm. It seems a generic tattoo and doesn’t even look like monarch chrysalis . The only reason I was getting tattoo because I wanted cocoon look like Monarch chrysalis. It had meaning for me. Because of excitement and first experience and Brandon drawing was black and white so I didn’t noticed the big difference. After coming home and taking of the cover I realized how different is and how far from Monarch chrysalis. I knew that it may be different as a tattoo than my drawing but I didnt expect that much difference. Coloring orange and black doesn’t make Chrysalis look like Monarch cocoon. Every butterfly has a specific shape of Chrysalis. Brandon kept saying like some details cannot be done but later I found a tattoo example exactly what I wanted. Obviously it could be done. Also they kept saying that they cannot make smaller because of the details which they didnt even put details in my drawing but still made twice as big as I intended to have it. I guess bigger it gets they make more money. I could be happier at least if they kept the special & specific shape of Monarch Chrysalis. Why to change the simple but specific shape that identify Monarch? I was thinking to add Monarch butterfly in the future now I am afraid it will look just like any other simple butterfly. For the first time now I am disappointed! And it wasnt cheap.

My mom and I wanted to get matching tattoos but I am 17 years old. I live in Greenville Nc and there’s a law here that says minors can’t get tattooed regardless of the parent consent. I saw in Virginia you could have parent consent in some areas and I was reaching out to different studios to find out. I called this place and told the person I had a couple of questions, as I was saying I was 17 he rudely said “ I’m gonna stop you right there” and then proceeded to hang up the phone. Try if your feeling lucky got a tattoo and it came out terrible, missing spots crooked lines, and overall felt rushed and called to get a missed spot filled in and was told wait till it heals, the price for tattoos here is also very high for rushed work, won’t be seeing me again. Thanks Tony 👎

Everyone at Salt water has a great attitude I personally have been to multiple shops in Virginia Beach and salt water always stood out to me I’ve gotten multiple tattoos in the time I’ve lived here by Tony he is a great artist and an even better person to put your thoughts onto your skin everyone goes out of their way to make you feel comfortable and make you feel respected but like I said the best I can say is everyone here is just awesome to be around everyone is fair and just all-around some really cool guys 10 out of 10 recommend stop by and see what they can do for you and 100% guarantee they will knock out anything that you want to have do , bringing imagination into reality

Dont waste your time going in to see them if you dont want a black outline around your tattoo... They say anything without a black outline will bleed out and not look good in 5 years. No wonder they have time for walks ins when when everyone else is busy...

Everyone claims their artist is one you should see…Only a handful of shops in Hampton roads I’d recommend and this one is at the top. It feels like what a tattoo shop should.

Amazing shop. First piece I got done by tony and second one done by Mike. Every artist in the shop does an amazing job at what they do, and at fair prices.

Although a bit of a wait as a walk-in, it was still totally worth it. Im sad that my particular artist was just passing thru while visiting family on the area, but I will definitely go back for my next tattoo.

One of the artists that we talked to was very upset we walked in an hour and a half before they closed for a tattoo the size of a quarter. Then proceeded to say it was $100 for it to be on the upper ankle which is the highest Ive ever heard of for that location and size.

This is the only shop I will get work done in Va Beach. My artist Joey was professional and did one of my best pieces to date. I cant recommend this place more!
